I know you always get these questions here so I'm sorry for not having anything more interesting to ask but I'd really appreciate some help/advice.

I bought an immaculate 3GS from an auction. I stupidly didn't check the IMEI with Apple to see which carrier it was locked to. Anyway it turns out it's AT&T. The phone came completely back on factory settings so needs activating and then jailbreaking and unlocking so I can use it in the UK.

I've spend the best part of 6 hours today trying to activate the phone with Redsn0w and other tools but I can't even be sure what firmware it is running.

F0recast tells me the following:

Baseband - 05.13.04
Bootloader - 6.4

And at the bottom it says Firmware 4.0. It also says it's

When I try and use the 4.0 IPSW, Redsn0w rejects it saying it doesn't recognise the file. I've downloaded about 4 versions of it now from different sources such as Apply and Felix Bruns but still the same issue.

Any help at all on this will be amazing. Can I just buy an AT&T sim card to activate or does it have to be linked to an account? Or do I just sell it on eBay.com to someone in the states in the hope that they can get it working?

You can just buy an AT&T SIM card, it doesn't need to be linked or anything... You can also use PwnageTool (mac) or seas0npass (windows) to create a custom 4.2.1 firmware (without updating the baseband) and then unlock using ultrasn0w from Cydia.

seas0npass is for ATV2 only. Use sn0wbreeze (not as solid as Pwnagetool, but the latest versions seem to work fine) if you are on windows.
