So you used the "erase all content and settings" without first checking to see if you had a saved SHSH for that iOS version and now you are stuck, unable to restore - getting 3194 error?

If so, you have erased the operating system and you need to restore it.

The 3194 error is due to a SHSH mechanism that Apple added 1 and a half years ago - this forces people to update to the latest iOS version by blocking restores of older iOS versions.

The SHSH is unique for a specific iOS version on your iPhone. You need to backup a SHSH for each iOS version as they are released, also if you swap/replace your phone, your saved SHSH cannot be transferred to the replacement phone.

There is no way to bypass SHSH - you need to have planned in advance and confirmed that you have saved a copy of the correct SHSH before you do extreme things like "erase all content and settings".

In this type of situation, the worst thing you can do is panic and blindly try different "solutions" - the only solution is to restore to an iOS version which Apple is still signing. However because you have an iPhone 4 you can take steps to prevent your baseband being updated. This is not a simple process.

    dear sir,
infact it is my cousins phone which he got it from a guy who came from australia. as soon as he got the phone he wanted to erase all settings and contents and got into the present scenario. i have downloaded all the firmwares and kept it ready from 4.0 to 4.2.1. the person who gave him the phone told him that there was firmware 4.0.2 and limera1n on it. i am using itunes 10.0.0.68(was thinking the newer one might create problem). everytime i put it in DFU mode the itunes will recognise it as a phone in recovery mode and then i try to restore ..it starts extrcting the software but after contacting the server it says 3194 error. did a lot of searches and found that on system 32 u need to change the host file and i have entered
    # 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
    74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
    #127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
these are the last 3lines and i am not very sure if "#" is required on all or not required at all.
tried running limera1n , greenpoison etc but in vain. i guess i 1st need to restore and only later these might work.
tried accessing the device manager and checked apple mobile device usb driver and got this
    USB\VID_05AC&PID_1227\CPID:8930_CPRV:20_CPFM:03_SC EP:01_BDID:00_ECID:000001000E13BDF6_IBFL:00_SRTG:[IBOOT-574.4]
THIS IS THE MAXIMUM I HAVE REACHED SO FAR.
I AM A PRACTISING ORTHOPAEDICIAN AND NOT TOO MUCH OF A TECHNICAL GUY ON THESE STUFF.
I WOULD REALLY REALLY APPRECIATE YOU IF U CAN HELP ME OUT FROM THIS PREDICAMENT.
    PLEASE DO HELP ME OUT.

Please read the rest of the thread, as we've answered this already, but in any case -- you are most likely out of luck. 3194 means that Apple won't authorize the firmware revision you're trying to install to be restored to that phone. Updating the hosts file ONLY works if you have previously stored the SHSH with cydia or by using TinyUmbrella. If you haven't yet, you can't anymore -- the only answer is to upgrade to 4.2.1.

Erase all content and settings does exactly what it says it does -- it erases all data on the device except for what is required to re-flash it. The phone no longer has an iOS revision on it and must be restored in order to use. To restore the iOS on an iPhone 4, Apple has to be currently signing it OR you must have the stored SHSH from a period when they were signing it. The current version of iOS that was installed on the device has zero bearing on this.

In any case, the long and short of it is that if the device has been erased by using 'Erase all content and settings', your only two choices are:

    1) Using a stored SHSH from cydia or TinyUmbrella, upgrade to the version of iOS that corresponds to the SHSH you have. Let me be completely clear -- if you do not have an SHSH today or if all this talk of SHSH is making your head spin, there is a 99.95% chance that you do not have what you need for this. If you do not, there is a 100% chance that you cannot get it now. No matter what any youtube video or some guy online says, this is the most common misconception with the SHSH process. If you don't have it now, nothing is going to make it so you can get it for anything other than the current iOS revision (4.2.1 at the time of this post.)
    2) Restore the device to 4.2.1, which presently is tethered jailbreak only and cannot be unlocked.

I can appreciate based on your post that you mention you're not too much of a technical guy -- unfortunately, to solve the problem you've presented, you'll want to spend some time educating yourself on these terms -- one wrong step here and you'll turn that phone into an expensive brick.

No. SHSH is specific not only to the iOS revision but to the device that it was obtained for. There is not a way to use an SHSH for one ECID on a different device.

Read http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=SHSH and you might understand that 3194 is a symptom not a problem.
