iPhone and iPod touch: Setting up VPN says it should work on 3G

So it's your phone operator that is blocking VPN over 3G or you have a misconfigured APN

A quick google suggests that the answer depends on which APN you are using. The default iPhoen APN - yep some types of VPNs are blocked.

Odd. I've used a Cisco 3000 series concentrator (not *officially* supported, but works in a pinch, just doesn't forward DNS traffic. Easy to work around in most cases if you know the IPs of your servers) for several years and have had no issues connecting to the VPN over 3G on my 3G, 3GS, and 4. I use the connection over 3G is a quick way to test when people IM me asking if we're having VPN issues .

What VPN method are you using? IPSec or PPTP or ?

I was watching the logs on the server and see no traffic at all when I try to connect.

We use IPsec w/o cert (just group name + secret) that hits LDAP for back-end authentication. Just tested again over AT&T 3G (in the South East USA) and had no problems.

That said, we have issues with some of our users who use AT&T aircards connecting to the VPN in low coverage areas, sometimes they will have 4 or 5 bars but only be getting .5Mbps down or lower, and the VPN tunnel requires a bit of traffic to construct and maintain -- that has definitely caused problems for us. A few of those users are iPhone Tethering users as well, so it's plausible that you would be encountering this error -- but in our case, we see the connection attempts, it just fails constructing the tunnel....

Not necessarily true, L2TP and PPTP should work just as well as IPsec over 3G, there are confirmed reports of this if you do a quick google search. Are you having specific problems?
