I'm trying to upgrade my iPhone 3GS (UK) from 3.1.3 to OS4.

My phone came with 3.1.3 on it, so anyone else in the UK managed to upgrade directly from 3.1.3?

My provider is Orange, does that make any difference?

I'm using my iMac with iTunes 9.1 and it gets as far as preparing the iPhone for restore and just sits there, the phone reboots from the connect to iTunes screen to just displaying the Apple logo.

I get an error 2005 message, which Apple suggests reseting the SMC (which I've done) but still it won't restore the firmware. I've checked the MD5 and it's fine and it is the correct 3GS firmware.

After failures the phone restores fine to the 3.1.3 OS so it can't be the cable! I've got every other USB device unplugged too...

It'll work with any iPhone 3G or 3GS so long as you have the correct firmware image. Make sure you restore, there seems to be a few problems with upgrades. Also make sure you have you UDID registered, without that registration you will end out with a phone asking to activate. Try removing all USB devices etc.. and make sure you only have iTunes (9.1) running.

Is that the correct one for 3GS?

Problem solved!!!

I followed the guide to uninstall iTunes from my mac....

Removing iTunes for Mac OS X

Then reinstall iTunes 9.1 and hey presto! I now have OS4 on my UK Orange iPhone 3GS...
