i found out what it was causing it, it was the supreme preferences 3.0, i uninstalled it and everything is working fine now except for the settings that it crashes when i try to go in, but i can use the phone since all my settings are set already, so, i'll just wait for the next unlock solution.

Make sure to fully power cycle the phone once you uninstall it -- you may be surprised to find it works again after a complete reboot once you've uninstalled it. One of the other curious things, a lot of the preferences that supreme preferences installs are still active after you uninstall it. That may be what's causing the settings.app to crash. I noticed after I set it to download 1000 messages it would keep that setting even after I uninstalled it. That's one of the things about this type of software, it's not always friendly during uninstall operations and doesn't always uninstall 'cleanly'.

In either case, holding off for the moment would be a good thing -- soon enough there's the possibility of extracting SHSH blobs for the firmware your device is running, and if that happens, you'd be able to create what you needed to re-restore the same iOS version onto the device. Anything you do now runs the risk of putting you in a situation where your phone stops working, so I think you're 100% correct to just hold off and wait until the tools that let you dig yourself out are made available.

ok, new problem, i was trying to upgrade to 4.2.1 and preserve the baseband, ran tiny umbrella, saved the shsh blobs but tiny umbrella does not detect the firmware version on the iphone? what can i do?? when i do the shift+restore after starting the tss server it goes like is restoring but the phone is on, i can use it and everything and then after a while a get error 0XE8000013. Any ideas

Also, can i update to 4.1 or restore to 4.0.2 preserving the baseband with pwnage tool 4.1? or 4.2.1?

Hmm, have you installed RecoveryGuard by pushfix? your symptoms match exactly with the way that this tweak prevents "accidental" upgrades.

Solution: uninstall it and try to update again, or use DFU mode (restore only via DFU mode - update not possible)

yes, i had install, just uninstalled it as soon as i saw ur post. Question, can i restore using pwnage tool and will that prevent the baseband update? Like, run pwanage tool 4.1 or 4.2 and restore to a cooked custom ipsw 4.0.2 or 4.1 ios?

I thought we already established that you ONLY had a SHSH saved for iOS 4.2.1. So why are you suddenly asking about restoring custom 4.0.2 or 4.1 IPSWs? These won't work - you MUST have a SHSH to restore custom IPSW.

    You have two options:

use Tiny Umbrella (try to use the very latest OS X only beta version)
Procedure here: The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella: Prevent iPhone4 Baseband Update

With the latest TinyUmbrella beta, you don't need to use greenpois0n to kick the phone out of recovery mode. TinyUmbrella can do that now even for 4.2.1

Or use pwnagetool 4.2 and restore the custom IPSW using iTunes.

Be sure to use iTunes 10.1.x

ok, so, question, use pwange tool to restore to a custom IPSW i have to have the saved shsh blobs also? That was the question i wanted to ask. Let's say i wanna use pwanage tool to restore to a custom 4.1 IPSW and preserve the baseband, i must have the save shsh for 4.1 or is that just required when doing it with tiny umbrella?

When you want to restore a custom 4.1 IPSW, you either need to have a saved SHSH or apple needs to still be signing 4.1

Right now Apple is ONLY signing 4.2.1 (as soon as they release 4.3 - Apple will stop signing 4.2.1)

Apple designed the SHSH system to prevent downgrading, there is no way to bypass the SHSH on recent devices including the ATV2, iPad, iPhone4, new bootrom 3GS and 3rd/4th generation iPod Touch.

TinyUmbrella allows you to save the SHSH blobs from Apple for your device and a specific iOS version. Then once you have the SHSH blobs saved for a specific iOS version, you can ALWAYS restore that iOS version on your device.

Run TinyUmbrella, go to the advanced tab, make sure "set hosts to Cydia on exit" is set, click "apply"
    Close TinyUmbrella

    Get Pwnagetool 4.2 from here
    Dev-Team Blog - What's in a name?

follow the instructions here: but instead of iOS 4.1 use the iPhone 4 iOS 4.2.1 IPSW downloaded from http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm

The instructions are exactly the same as for iOS 4.1 - you are just using a new version of pwnagetool and a 4.2.1 IPSW
