Default Confused about jailbreak and unlock

I have done this before but now I see too many new options.

I have a 3gs, 05.13.04 Baseband on a corrupted IOS 4.0 install. Time to redo something, anything that will work now untethered. I do not have an ATT chip available.

I have Pwnage_4.1.3 and the latest redsnow. I read about the SAM option too, I think it eliminates the need for the ATT chip?

When I did the 4.0 upgrade I needed an ATT chip before I could load anything. So I do not understand how the SAM loaded on a phone before the IOS is overwritten can help me?

I also am a bit muddled over what the difference between Pwnage and redsnow is? Do I need both, either or which?

    thanks

Two important details that nearly every 3GS poster forgets to include:

    1. Bootrom version?
    2. What SHSH do you have saved?

Ok, yes - SAM eliminates the need to have an AT&T SIM card (for 3G and 3GS iPhones).

The jailbreak for 4.0 that worked on every device (jailbreakme v2) was a different type of jailbreak. That is why it required an AT&T sim card.

You have a few options. However you need to be careful to keep your unlock.

Pwnagetool creates a pre-jailbroken version of a specific iOS version, you then put your iPhone into a special "pwned" mode and restore the pre-jailbroken version via iTunes onto your phone. One of the features of pwnagetool is that it can block the updating of your baseband to a higher version than 05.13.04.

Redsn0w starts with you restoring or updating with a 100% original iOS version, direct from Apple. This always removes the jailbreak and often breaks your chance of unlock. Once you have restore a 100% original iOS version, you run redsn0w to jailbreak your newly installed iOS version.

For the 3GS, neither pwnagetool or redsn0w includes the ability to unlock your phone. You need to install ultrasn0w to unlock (and have baseband 05.13.04 or lower -or iPad baseband 6.15)

SAM changes your iPhone so that it reports to iTunes that you have an AT&T sim installed. iTunes then talks to an Apple server and activates the phone properly.

Read http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/32703.htm to understand the difference between jailbreak, activation/hacktivation and unlock.

I recommend you use Pwnagetool 4.1.2 and make a custom 4.1 IPSW. iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.1] Stay away from 4.2.1 unless you need to use AirPlay or wireless printing.

As for SAM.. I have managed to integrate SAM and ultrasn0w into a Pwnagetool 4.1.2 custom IPSW for a 3GS - it activated legitimately via iTunes. The problem is it is NOT simple to do this. So.. you are better off hacktivating, then install SAM and remove lockdown patch/hacktivation. Then activate legitimately.
