Default Confused about 4.3.3 baseband preservation options

I've got a 3GS, new bootrom, SHSHs since 3.1.3 on file. Baseband is 05.12.01. iOS was 4.0.0, everything was working fine. Then updated to 4.3.3 using sn0wbreeze 2.7.3, no baseband update.

Phone still works fine, is jailbroken - but no longer has any GPRS/UMTS connection. I've got one signal bar strength right after turning it on, but it will change to "no signal" within a minute.

    What am I doing wrong?
    1. Is 4.3.3 not working with the old baseband (I thought sn0wbreeze would fix that baseband lock)?
    2. Or do I need to install the 6.15 baseband (I read old posts about broken GPS and compass in many cases, is that fixed)?
    3. Is the only way to restore phone & data capability besides WiFi to revert back to 4.0.0 or to which 4.something?

I apologize if this can be found using Google or the forum search. I spent an hour searching, but probably used the wrong search terms.

Do you have ultrasn0w installed? (I don't think sn0wbreeze installs it).
Have you tried this SIM card on another phone?

I don't know about any incompatibility between 4.3.3 and 05.12.01, but if nothing works, you could try restoring to official 4.0/4.0.1/4.0.2, which will update your baseband to still vulnerable 05.13.04 and try updating to 4.3.3 with sn0wbreeze custom firmware again.
