    Question China Unicom iPhone 4

So China Unicom has been selling unlocked iPhone 4's for some time now. But there are a lot of folks buying them and then reselling the phone and service separately. China Unicom is threatening to remote-lock the phones if they are found to have a SIM other than the one provided (or maybe any China Unicom SIM).

So, I got 3 questions for the gurus:
Is there a way to tell if the phone is indeed unlocked?
How can China Unicom do this? (i.e., is it through a security policy on the phone or firmware)
Will jailbreaking stop their evil scheme?

here's a link for more info:

Yes you can remove the activation and trigger a re-activation with a non china unicom sim. There was a thread explaining how to do this without restoring. One point is that you must remove any passcode on the phone before trying this technique.

They audit the phones they sold and match them to activation data, any that were not activated on China Unicom can be flagged.

They then report the flagged phones to Apple (via IMEI or some other unique ID of each phone) and Apple sets them as locked to China Unicom in their giant activation database.

So is there any way to counteract this? If jailbreaking doesn't work, I guess unlocking might?

It really depends on how China Unicom ends up implementing this, they could do it many different ways.

If the method China Unicom chooses is IMEI based, we can't help you - as there is no way to change IMEI (even if there was, it's illegal in most countries and we don't endorse illegal activities)

    Bottom line:

if a contact has been broken without paying the appropriate exit fees to legally terminate the contract - then China Unicom is within their rights to take action to retrieve the lost revenue.

If exit fees have been correctly paid, I feel that China Unicom is double-dipping.
