Default Can't restore to update from 4.0.1

I have an iPhone 4 with 4.0.1 jailbroken and unlocked for regular travels abroad.

Recently, I've decided to upgrade to a newer version, last I tried it was 4.3.3 that I could keep an unlock and upgrade. I want to upgrade to allow syncing again, which I had lost some time ago. I haven't been able to sync for at least 6 mos, so new music, etc. not getting over. ( I get a 13019 error when trying) This means also that I am not getting backed up unless I do so manually using iphone explorer, which is a real pain.

Anyway, when I go to restore after building a custom ISPW using Pwnage tool 4.3.3 I get error codes such as this one: "the iPhone "xxx" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1600)." I also got the 21 error. Both of which I have followed instructions to fix repeatedly.

I'm in a loop... any suggestions?

    Couple of things:

    1) First and foremost, you probably didn't need to restore to fix the 13019 error. In most cases, this can be fixed by telling iTunes to stop syncing each type of media, then doing a sync, then manually enabling each type of content to sync one at a time. At that point, if you still have problems, you'll know which content type is causing the problem. In most cases, restoring to a new firmware actually won't fix this issue, because 13019 is usually indicative of a specific problem it has with one of your media libraries. I've gotten this before when I purchased something on the phone, then had iTunes download it, then attempted to do a sync. Until I removed it from the iTunes Library on my PC, it wouldn't sync, it kept conflicting and giving me the 13019. I know it's too late to attempt this type of fix now, but in the future if it happens again...

    2) You have made no mention of SHSH files, which may mean you are not aware of them and how to use them. I recommend you very quickly click through the link in my signature to learn about SHSH files and how important they are -- they will be something you need to understand and that you need to be able to work with to continue jailbreaking your iPhone 4 now and in the future. If you do not have SHSH files for 4.3.3 but your phone still boots and is activated, you should be able to use iFaith to grab the partial SHSH blobs from the device. If you do not have an SHSH file for the version of iOS you are restoring, and the version you're restoring is NOT currently being signed by Apple (e.g., any iOS revision other than the latest stable, 4.3.5, or the iOS Betas, 5.x), then the restore WILL FAIL, telling you that your device is not eligible for the requested build. There is no way around this -- if you don't have your SHSH and Apple is not signing, there is absolutely nothing you can do to force that version of iOS to boot on the device.

    3) 1600 is indicative of you attempting to do a restore of a custom IPSW but not being in "pwned" DFU mode. (not just DFU mode, pwned DFU). Use redsn0w (or iReb, though we don't recommend it unless you have to) to get your device into pwned DFU mode prior to attempting to restore. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU HAVE AN SHSH ON FILE WITH SAURIK OR LOCALLY WITH TINYUMBRELLA FOR IOS 4.3.3 IF YOU ATTEMPT THIS, OR YOUR PHONE WILL JUST BOOTLOOP AND YOU WILL ERASE THE PARTIAL SHSH BLOBS FOR THE RUNNING IOS REVISION! You CANNOT undo this action!

Not trying to scare you, but there's a lot to know and pay attention to when jailbreaking an iPhone 4 (and any iPhone running iOS 4.x+). Since SHSH won't go away (matter of fact, they're starting to use it for other things like baseband, etc.), it really is important that you have an understanding of what it is and how to save yours, to protect your ability to restore and jailbreak again in the future.

    Default you rock...

Ok, I'm not sure how I made it sound like it was too late, as it's not... I haven't gotten anywhere yet. I just kept getting bumped whenever I attempted the upgrade/restore.

So, now I have unchecked everything accept the apps to sync and my iPhone is syncing! Yahoo! Thank you! As simple as it seems, its a cool thing.

Anyway, I will read the shsh post, and I DO have shsh blobs... just never really understood the purpose of why

Now I will i guess. I have done a recent SHSH to tiny umbrella and will proceed once I get a better gist of it all. I'd love to just restore to the latest I can and be unlocked, but I find it hard to just know what to do without weeding through many forums to find out what I can do. iClarified helps a lot tho... they make it almost no brainer, but no mention of the SHSH issue, strangely.

    Thanks again n1ckn4m3!!

ps... what a relief that I am backing up!

Great news! I was most worried that you had attempted to restore and it had failed, as while one of the fail conditions (and the one that you experienced, thankfully!) is that your phone just reboots with the old version of iOS, the other two fail conditions are that the phone kicks into recovery mode and won't kick out until you restore iOS (and therefore need an SHSH), or it can get stuck in DFU mode and won't kick out until you restore iOS (and therefore also would need an SHSH).

Very glad to hear the easy and quick solution worked for you! Strange that iTunes doesn't make the error message more indicative of what the problem is, I was a little surprised at the amount of searching I had to do before finding out specifically what was causing it.

Best part about a sync issue is that if you re-enable app syncing or music syncing and see the problem occur again, you can check your iTunes logs to see a fairly clear log entry of the specific offending database, and in most cases, the specific file (or files) that are causing the issue.

Glad again to hear that you got it fixed!

Thanks again n1ckn4m3! Yes, I too am surprised at how un-Apple-like that message is.
