Default Can't restore to custom IPSW

My iPhone 3G is currently on 3.1.2 with BB 5.11.07. I used Pwnage on a Mac to create a custom FW to upgrade to 4.2.1 while keeping my existing BB using this tutorial:

iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak and Unlock Your iPhone 3G Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.2.1]

I ran the whole process through and ended up with a Pwned phone, which was great. Then I plugged it into my PC (on which my iPhone backups and media are kept in iTunes) and it found my phone and I started to restore the data from the backup. Then my PC crashed (it's a problem I'm trying to fix) in the middle of the data restore. My iPhone was OK but it still doesn't contain any of my data.

Then when I rebooted the PC and reconnected the phone iTunes didn't recognise it as a "new" phone and didn't give me the option to restore my data from a backup. So I then though I'd put it into DFU mode on the Mac and restore the custom IPSW again. That did't work and gave me the following error:

"The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1600)."

So then I thought I'd try and go back to 3.1.2 (my previous firmware to preserve the baseband) and I managed to do a regular restore via iTunes on the Mac to 3.1.2 still keeping baseband 5.11.07. That worked and the phone is now working unjailbroken (I'm on AT&T) on 3.1.2.

I then put the phone into DFU mode and tried to restore to my custom 4.1.2 firmware and iTunes gave the 1600 error again. BTW, I also tried entering recovery mode with the Connect to iTunes logo but it still threw up an error and couldn't restore.

I've searched the forum for answers but can't find anything that seems to fit. I'd be grateful if anyone has any ideas as to how I can get the phone to restore to the custom FW so I can try restoring my data again on the PC.

    Cheers

Use the PwnageTool application to enter pwned DFU mode on your iPhone. Connect to the mac, launch PwnageTool and click DFU, follow the steps. When done, it should accept custom IPSWs.

Thanks element, you're a star! It looks like it's working now. I didn't realise there was a difference between regular DFU mode and pwned DFU mode. Lesson learnt!
