4.2.1 battery issues
I upgraded to 4.2.1 (6.15.0 firmware) and thus have battery drain issues. I tried SAM prefs but had no luck. I am in the process of obtaining an old att sim card. Can I deactivate through SAM prefs or redsnow, then insert att card to activate using the below method:
A) 1st Solution: try to activate the phone using the official sim if u have it (even if the sim itself is old and not working) , or borrow it from a friend if it's possible, by any means, try to have an access to one and use it
or do I need to resotre the entire phone, activate using old att card, jailbreak, and then use utlrasnow.
Any help would be appreciatted.

same issue here am on 4.1 and the battery drainz like crazy . here is what you should do ? after googling for hours the best and final solution for battery drain on the 3g is to downgrade to 4.0.1 why ? here is the original post that has been jumping around and ppl who tried is said its fixed the issue
btw i tried to activate with itunes did not work and with the SAM thingy nothing either
BUT my question is : isnt the 4.0 a kill for the 3G ppl complained of it being very slow . ? should i only put the 4.0.1 can i use the 4.0.2 >???
read up
Hi all,
I was using a JB and unlocked 4.2.1 iOS on my iPhone 3G with 6.15 baseband and the battery was draining very fast and getting hot. After spending days trying so many options (including the de-activation by readsn0w and installing SAM module, which didn’t work for me), I finally managed to find the final fix:
1) Downgrade to IOS 4.0.1 or 4.0 using iTunes. It’s REALLY necessary because the source of the problem (certificate verification in data connections, which keeps failing and consuming CPU on jailbroken phones) isn’t present in versions prior do 4.1.
2) You’ll receive the famous iTunes 1015 error at the end of the process. Now it’s just to close iTunes and use Tinyumbrella, run it, click on your the iphone icon and then on “Exit Recovery” button – the process on the iPhone will continue normally until the end.
3) Now you’ve a stock 4.0 or 4.0.1 iPhone. It’s just to jailbreak and unlock it using redsn0w (tip: if you choose to restore to 4.0.1, when choosing the ipsw file in redsn0w it will only work for the 4.0 version, don’t kwow why).
4) And that’s it… it’s just to install ultrasn0w to unlock and enjoy again your full-batery life jailbroken iPhone 3G or 3GS!:p:p
I’ll appreciate any feedback if worked for you guys!
Regards.

The certificate issues should be able to be 100% fixed by proper use of SAM to obtain legitimate activation (including certificates) and setting up iPhone as new, then enabling push notifications and (if you don't want push notifications at all) turning them off again. Once you are wildcard activated, you can uninstall SAM.
People who are experiencing this problem have not followed the instructions properly.
Performance for the 3G iPhone is much worse on iOS 4.0.x due to excessive spotlight indexing (disable spotlight indexing for text messages).
