4.0 to 4.3 jailbreak questions...
I've got an iPhone 4 and after browsing through several forums and finding lots of tutorials, I still have a few questions that hopefully an expert can answer...
I am fairly aware of the jailbreak process - thats been documented to death at various places - what I'm interested in is the update process from a jailbroken 4.0 to jailbroken 4.3. If I now run TinyUmbrella it says I can't get my SHSH blobs becuase Apple isn't signing anymore (or something similar), although I'm pretty sure I got them last time I jailbroke my phone - Cydia shows I have SHSH iOS:4.0.2, 4.1, 4.2.1, 4.2b3, 4.3 ... Although I am still on 4.0 (8A293), model MC605B with modem 01.59.00 (officially unlocked from Apple direct). Is Cydia reliable enough here as I've heard rumours that this sometimes isn't the case?
I have more than a few apps from Cydia, most of them customised to my liking and that in itself is no small or quick feat. Is there a way of backing up all the apps that I have downloaded from Cydia so that when I update and jailbreak again, I can quickly reinstall my entire collection? And is there a way of backing up all settings or data within the apps so that all my customisations are reapplied?
So, in a nutshell - Can I use an app to backup all my Cydia apps, settings and data; jailbreak using GreenPoison from 4.0 to 4.3 (without issue); then reinstall all my apps, settings and data in one fell swoop? Sounds easy right?! I hope so!
Thanks for all help in advance.
1) Yep - Cydia doesn't lie. If it tells you it has an SHSH on file for the iOS revision, it's pretty much accurate. That said, we all recommend you use something like iSHSHit (on iOS) or TinyUmbrella (on your desktop) to save local copies of your SHSH when each revision comes out -- this way you have the files yourself and do not have to rely on another server somewhere. Always better to be prepared, as they say.
2) As far as an app to back up your cydia packages, there are several out there like AptBackup and PkgBackup, but in testing, *none* of them have worked for me -- I've always ended up just wiping the phone and manually reinstalling the packages. Since Cydia can queue package installs now, this is a pretty quick process. Any AppStore app data will be backed up in the iTunes backup, so you have nothing to worry about there, and if there is anything specific you want to back up from the jailbroken apps, you can just connect via SSH or iPhoneBrowser and grab them.
So yea, you can do a backup, get yourself to 4.3.1 with no issue, and then reinstall the packages. But the package reinstall won't be a 'hands off' operation, you will have to make a list and queue 'm if you want to ensure they all install successfully.
