You need a 4.1 SHSH, this is because the 4.1 custom IPSW does not pwn the bootchain - so the SHSH checks are still there.

If you have a 4.1 SHSH - you can restore custom 4.1 IPSW made with pwnagetool 4.1.2 or 4.1 (I recommend you stick to pwnagetool 4.1.2) onto your new bootrom 3GS.

i dont have the any of the shsh blobs saved...so what all options do i have?

if thats the case then my best bet is to wait for an untethered jailbreak for new bootrom 3gs on 4.2.1 ....

when a proper untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 is released (not the "backup plan") then that will probably be able to be used to make a baseband preserving 4.2.1 custom ipsw.

Wait. Don't go to iPad baseband and stock 4.2.1 - you play Russian roulette if you take that option.

but how will the ' baseband preserving 4.2.1 custom ipsw.' be usefull to me as i wont be able to update to a custom firmware,only after upgrading to 4.2.1 will i be able to use the unthethred jailbreak ..i still wont be able to unlock as my baseband would have upgraded to the default 4.2.1 baseband

youre right,theres no way im going to update my basebad to the ipad one...i'd rather w8 for an unlock for the default 4.2.1 baseband

hey guys i managed to restore it to 4.0.1
as u may know from the thread my newbootrom 3gs was stuck in apple logo/dfu mode / recovery mode after a "Reset all settings" and it was on 4.0.1

these are the tools i used

-Windows 7 64bit
- iTunes 10.1
- Redsn0w 0.9.6b4
- Tiny Umbrella 4.1.13
- Official 4.1 firmware
-Official 4.0.1 firmware


-using redsnow entered "pwned dfu mode"
-started TSS server in Tiny Umbrella

doing the above steps allowed me to restore to stock 4.0.1 using itunes.the restore was sucessful but my phone was now stuck ONLY in DFU MODE ( no apple logo or Recovery),i got really scared at this point,....

i started seaching the net as to what to do....found something so i tried this


-Opened redsnow again and ticked on cydia alone.
-The phone was going through all the stages of jailbreak but redsnow was not proceeding halfway through "Updating Ramdisk".....so i just disconnected my iphone and it went back to dfu mode

-I opened redsnow again and ticked on boot tethered only and whoopie,the phone is up and running again.

im on stock 4.0.1,just have to jb and unlock


i hope this helps others

ok i guess the "Updating Ramdisk" part was necessary because i cant seem to jailbreak using limerain or jailbreak me and everytime i power off the iphone i need to use redsnow to "boot tethered now".....so i tried installing cydia again ,this time the "updating ramdisk" got stuck at 30% so i cancelled it and tried to "boot tethered now" but that also got stuck halfway and iphone was not booting up....

again i tried installing cydia ,this time "updating ramdisk" completed,"updating kernal" started and it got stuck at 90%.....anyways i disconnected again and did "boot tethered" and thankfully it booted ,still no cydia installed though.......

i dunno why the "installing cydia" of redsnow stops in between sometime in the beginning and sometime at the end??....any suggesstions

since i used Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 it does tethered booting of 4.1 ipsw......is there any redsnow version which will allow me to boot tethered with 4.0 ipsw because Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 only accepts 4.1 ipsw??



edit: ok now i tried booting again after 5-6 hrs ,im getting the white screen...when i try to restore using itunes it gives me error 28........

It is very confusing - especially with all the different beta versions of redsn0w.

Jailbreak for iPhone 4 on 4.1 - redsn0w 0.9.6 beta 2, 3 or limera1n or greenpois0n or Pwnagetool 4.1.2
Tethered jailbreak for iPhone 4 on 4.2.1 - 0.9.6 beta 4, beta 5 or beta 6

Error 28 is normally a hardware error.
