3GS pwnage 4.2.1 cydia crashes
I decided to update my jailbroken 3.0 3gs. I followed this guide:
http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-iphone-3gs-4.2.1-ios-iphone-4-untethered-with-pwnagetool-unlock-ultrasn0w/
My sshh was backed up in Cydia and locally using TinyUmbrella. I'm now running 4.2.1 with 5.11.07 modem firmware. When launching Cydia it quickly closes. After step 13 it says:
UPDATE 1: The link above of PwnageTool bundle for iPhone 4 and 3GS has been updated. All problems related to Cydia should now be fixed.
So I thought I'd be fine. But no. What are my options to fix or reinstall Cydia?

Why are you not simply using Pwnagetool 4.2? It is properly tested, bundles the correct Cydia and will block baseband update, plus offer untethered jailbreak of 4.2.1 on all devices.
I'd try again with Pwnagetool 4.2
As I've said several times previously. Redmondpie is not a trusted source of reliable jailbreak information.
Other than that, did you restore from iTunes backup?

Hey cell 247
So I had the same issue a few weeks back when I updated my phone using pwnage 4.2. Cydia would keep crashing after a fresh jailbreak with a custom fw.
Here's what I did.
1. Use iReb to clear all 1600, 1601 etc errors you might receive
2. Try restoring using the custom FW again but make sure you are in 'pwned DFU mode' - regular DFU mode will NOT work. (You can use pwnage tool to enter pwned DFU mode, or use Redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 to 'enter pwned DFU mode'
3. If that doesn't work, follow step 1 again. After this instead of using Pwnage tool to load a custom fw, use Redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 to re-jailbreak the device. Since your custom FW is already loaded just click the 'install Cydia' checkbox. This will load the limra1n exploit and re-jailbreak your CUSTOM fw device, and install Cydia. This will over-write any bad files and then you're good to go!
Let me know if it works for you

I'd suggest that people try the redsn0w part of option 3 in this list first... That will fix most incorrectly installed versions of Cydia.
Especially when people use custom IPSW made from unofficial pwnagetool bundles or jailbreak first with greenpois0n

How to reinstall Cydia (and Terminal)

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS 4.2.1 & iPhone 4 Untethered with PwnageTool and Unlock | Redmond Pie

My Situation after jailbreaking my iPhone 3GS with Pwnage tool (Mac) [4.2.1] as described at
iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using PwnageTool (Mac) [4.2.1] was:
Cydia and Terminal would crash right after starting!
So how to re-install Cydia without re-jailbreaking
(which I, by the way tried several times, but which did not effect the crashing of Cydia)
The Solution for me was:
PART A. Re-installing Terminal
Step 1: I first downloaded MobileTerminal_511-1_iphoneos-arm.deb from
MobileTerminal_511-1_iphoneos-arm.deb - mobileterminal - MobileTerminal_511-1_iphoneos-arm.deb - A GUI Terminal application for the iPhone - Google Project Hosting
Step 2: Using PhoneView I copied the downloaded MobileTerminal_511-1_iphoneos-arm.deb to /var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall
Instead of PhoneView you can probably use other (Mac or Win) programs like DiskAid_4_6.
(alternatively you can SSH into iPhone; to do this for Windows: Use WinCSP. for Mac: Use CyberDuck;
However, this did not work for me! I got no connection)
Important: If you can’t locate the “Cydia” folder in “Media”, create it. Then create another folder named “AutoInstall” in “Cydia” folder and copy the .deb file there.
Step 3: After iPhone reboot, the Terminal app was working fine.
PART B.Re-Install Cydia via Terminal
Step 1: I downloaded cydia_1.0.3366-1_iphoneos-arm.deb from Index of /debs/
Step 2: I renamed it to Cydia.deb
Step 3: Using PhoneView (or alternative programs, see above) I copied the downloaded Cydia.deb to the iPhone root directory (uppermost iPhone directory).
Step 4: Then I started the Terminal application in my iPhone and logged in as superuser by typing:
su <return>
alpine <return>
Step 5: To re-install Cydia I had to type in the following command line in Terminal:
dpkg -i /cydia.deb
(an alternative possibility would have been to SSH into the iPhone using programs like CyberDuck (Mac) or WinSCP (Windows) (SSH, user:root, pw:alpine) and place the Cydia.deb in the ROOT directory. Then type the following command to reinstall Cydia: dpkg -i /cydia.deb )
Good luck
H.
