As apparent from my previous post, I am currently running my iPhone 3G on iOS4.0 using the pwnage tool & unlocked with Ultrasn0w with the baseband on 5.11.07.

I would like to move to iOS4.2.1 and need would need to unlock, jailbreak and hactivate. What are my options as of today? If possible I would love to retain by Base band and not update it.....

Found this on the Dev Team blog:
"This PwnageTool also contains a 4.2.1 bundle for iPhone3G owners…for all else, it’s still only 4.1"
Yes you can use pwnagetool 4.1.3 to make a custom IPSW for 3G that prevents baseband update whilst restoring to 4.2.1

This ONLY works for iPhone 3G and ONLY with custom IPSW. (there was a small update issued later that added support for old bootrom 3GS, but this needs to be installed manually)

Just read about the Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM).

Have not updated my 3G as yet, but when I do so it will be using a custom IPSW & pwnage tool. Should I install SAM?

Are you using ultrasn0w? Do you need to hacktivate? If so.. try and use SAM

I intend to use SAM and I need to hacktivate.

When creating the custom IPSW, should I enable hactivation and then afterwards use SAM, or considering that I would be using SAM should i not enable hacktivation in the IPSW?

You can either hacktivate in the custom IPSW and then later install first ultrasn0w and then SAM and remove hacktivation.

OR you can bundle SAM and ultrasn0w (with required supporting packages) into the custom IPSW - if you can manage that (I've done it and it's not easy) then you need to turn off hacktivation in the IPSW and reboot the phone two times after your restore the IPSW *before* you connect it to iTunes and let it activate normally.

    Ive hit a roadblock....

Im using windows so i first installed Mac OS on VM ware. I created the custom IPSW using 4.1.3 unlock Edition with ONLY cydia installed. Baseband Update was not selected. It took about 45 mins to generate the file but finally it did. I copied that back to windows..

I'm using Redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 for the jailbreak - but when i select the custom IPSW it says unable to recognize specified IPSW. Am i using an incorrect version of redsn0w?

Redsn0w ALWAYS wants the original apple IPSW (usually this is the same iOS version you are currently running on your iDevice)

    Sorry - My mistake.

So i selected the original 4.2.1 IPSW and it accepted it. On the next screen I have only selected Enter pwned DFU mode right now - nothing else is selected. Cydia is part of the Custom IPSW. Once pwned, I will select the custom IPSW from Itunes.

    Will update on progress.

    Thanks is advance.
