3G Jailbrake & Unlock Questions

I could use a little help and advice. I have an iPhone 3G running 3.1.3 (7E18) and modem firmware 05.12.01-5.9_M3S2. I have jailbroken the phone using Jailbrakeme.com then unlocked the phone using ultrasn0w.
I would like to upgrade the ios to the newer 4 ios but want to continue to have the phone unlocked. I want to be able to run some of the applications that will only run in ios 4.
Can anyone tell me:
1) Which of the ios 4 firmware’s is the safest and surest for me to update to and still have a jailbroken and unlocked device?
2) The simplest and easiest way to do the upgrade on a Windows PC?

I have installed VMware and can run OS X Leopard if necessary.

for 3G 3.1.3 / 4.1 / 4.1.2 are stable and fine (as far as i know)

First get SHSH blobs for 4.1/4.1.2 (immediately) - use tinyumbrella.
Create customIPSW using pwnagetool
use iTunes for restoring customIPSW on windows/mac.

I assume that you meant iOS blob for 4.2.1 not 4.1.2 (there is no iOS 4.1.2)

Also iOS blobs are very nice to have for 3G but not essential as you can always restore custom IPSW made with pwnagetool.

I have used tinyumbrella to save my SHSH blob(s) but how do I apply them. I understand I need to use pwnagetool to create a customIPSW but don't I use the original Apple IPSW to create the custom IPSW in pwnagetool? Where does the SHSH blob come in?

TinyUmbrella includes a TSS server, if you have this running during restore this supplies the SHSH blobs to iTunes which then merges them with the custom IPSW before sending this to the iPhone.

This works around the problem that Apple stops signing SHSH requests for a specific iOS version, because once you have the blobs saved, you can always serve them to iTunes via the TSS server built into TinyUmbrella.

Cydia also can do this for you if you have your blobs saved with Cydia and set the entry for Cydia into your hosts file before you try and restore with iTunes.
