Default Why does my phone say BLOCKED

Actually its my dads phone which i gave him a year ago for his birthday. It used to be my mine and worked fine for the year i had it. He is currently in residing in France, but has a UK sim. It was all working for the last year and now he tells me that all it says is BLOCKED.

Its from the UK, but was never activated with 02, it was bought from the Carphone warehouse when they were first released, and hence used the original userland hack to activate it and was used with my voda sim before i gave it to him.

He has had no problems at all, except yesterday it now just says BLOCKED.

He only has access to emergency calls.

I presume this may be an IMEI issue? But why, its not stolen or been reported stolen? I even have the box and the original carphone warehouse receipt which has the imei number on it.

Can o2 block these phones because they were never activated legitimetly?

    Any advice would be great.

99.99999% sure it is an IMEI issue.

The IMEI blacklist is shared across the whole EU - but the database is not updated in real-time especially between countries. This is why it lasted so long.

Of course o2 can blacklist a phone where you defaulted on the contract. This device is subsidised and unless you paid off the remainder of the contract before you took it to another carrier then o2 are legally allowed to consider this a breach of contract and blacklist the iPhone.

Only solution is to contact o2/carphone warehouse as under UK law only the requestor of the IMEI blacklist is authorised to remove it.

Do not ask about changing IMEI or anything else, that is illegal and can't be discussed on this forum.

    thanks for replies.

    Just to clarify - its a 2g running 1.3

    Will updating the firmware help?

If its an IMEI problem surely this wont?

I know old Zibri's tool allowed an IMEI change but as stated this is illegal and i wont be doing it.

Can an IMEI block be lifted?

Did i default on a contract? It was never signed up to a contract EVER. It was purchased from the Carphone warehouse, and jailbroken and hacktivated.

In what way did i default a contract, surely if i bought the phone (about 400) at the time, surely if i never signed up a contract it is not under a contract?

I also have a collegue who did the same thing at the same time, who lives in the UK, still has the phone and this has not been BLOCKED.

You have a valid point, the 2G was not carrier subsidised in the same way as the newer iPhones are. There however was a revenue sharing deal where the carrier had to pay a portion of the monthly subscriber revenue to Apple.

I have not heard of a 2G iPhone being IMEI blacklisted for any other reason than theft/reported lost on insurance.

Do you think, and this might be way off, that some one has reported the phone stolen and given the wrong imei?

If so what do you think I need to do.

Or I suppose some one might have changed the EMEI on there phone and this has been reported lost / stolen.

    Complete mystery to me.

Can the IMEI be un blacklisted. Reading some other forums this seems a nigh on impossible task.

This is now becoming a mystery?

I have spoken to o2, they said they haven't blocked the phone, then spoke to apple they say they haven't blocked the phone.

How can I get an imei lifted if they are saying they haven't blocked it.

    This is crazy.

How exactly does the iPhone report to you that it is blocked?

Does the IMEI shown by iTunes or reported from the info button on the "slide for emergency" screen on the iPhone match up with the IMEI inscribed on the back of the iPhone?
