    Default Version 2.0.1 > 3?

For starters: I'm a first class noob, I'm sorry about that. I need "special" help when it comes to stuff like this. And I don't know what I'm searching for.
I haven't used my iPhone for a very long time and I had someone else "jailbreak" it so I don't know anything at all about this stuff. And he's living in another country now.
My iPhone is currently version 2.0.1 with baseband version 04.05.04_G (at least I think that's the baseband?).
My hard drive with the old iTunes that was compatible with this version is now dead so I can't put any new stuff on the iPhone. That's why I "have to" update it.

How do I update it to the latest version? Does it matter that I have really old versions, especially the baseband? Should I follow any guide or do I need to do something different?
And the most important thing: Am I able to save the numbers, pictures, texts etc without doing a back up of the phone with the old iTunes (that I don't know the version number of)?

    I'd really appreciate help!
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    /Martin
