Default Upgrade from iPhone 3.0 to 3.1.2; or no?

Hey guys, I've been out of the loop for a good while now. I'm currently running on 3.0 (7A341) Jailbroken and unlocked with Redsn0w and Ultrasn0w.

I get great service with the unlock I have, everything works fine, and the battery life isn't so bad after re-adjusting the settings. But I have noticed a lot of the newer applications aren't compatible with my Baseban and aren't syncing at all. I'm not sure if it's because I'm running an older version and aren't up to date or what.

I can't afford to brick my phone so I've been sketchy about these new unlocks and processes of unlocking because why mess with a good thing right?

But I am having minor problems, and there's still the fear of using Cydia.. I haven't touched it or upgraded it in close to half a year...

I've stayed away from modding my phone with themes and cydia downloads because last time I tried using cydia, it looped my phone in a constant restart/off&on process. It basically was worse than 'bricking' it.

TL;DR: Should I upgrade to the newest unlock ?
    also:
How much more complex is the new process in comparison to the ultrasn0w cydia download unlock?

is it even worth the risk ? if so how do I go about doing this in a smart and careful method of unlock/jailbreaking?

    ===========
sorry guys I'm super damn tired, let me know if my post was too thick, I'll be back tomorrow. Goodnight

On mac, use iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G on OS 3.1.3 Using PwnageTool (Mac) or download a pre-made custom IPSW and shift-click restore on windows.

    I recommend the mac method.

This keeps the ability to unlock with ultrasn0w.

You can sync your iPhone from your iTunes backup afterwards and you should have no huge problems. Some people do experience problems restoring from a jailbroken backup. The solution is to restore with custom IPSW again but set your iPhone up as new. This second approach gives you a clean iPhone but you lose saved SMS and other data you don't sync via iTunes.

Great advice, however I unfortunately don't have a mac, nor does anyone I know. I'm also without a jailbroken back up, since I just recently had a reinstall of my pc operating system. The custom IPSW method is probably more simple than it sounds, though it's always deterred me from pursuing such a method.

When the Dev team released the new unlock for 3.0 I waited for weeks if not months so I was elated, having waited weeks if not months for it to be finally released ! I had just newly bought my phone with a locked BB I believe it was 2.2.1? . At that time I was new and clueless to Hackint0shes existence. So in all honesty I'm kind of a nooby at this.

If there's really no reason for me to upgrade my unlock, to 3.1.x then I simply won't. I thought maybe there were updates that came with the upgraded software that might improve my phone's ability as far as battery life, interface, and that sort of thing.

This new Blacksn0w/Blackra1n method seems confusing to me.. having to go into var libraries and such. I'm guessing through the use of the open source, which I have used before to add custom icons to my phone but nothing more than that.

I'm not a complete idiot as far as technology goes, my ability to learn new processes makes up for my lack of knowledge. I guess I'm just wondering if it's worth the trouble of upgrading or moving forward with the community and it's newest and latest.. Or be the guy that stays behind.

and if it is worth while to upgrade to the newest and latest unlocked/jailbroken; Where do I start?

You can make a backup of your iPhone at any time simply by plugging the phone in, running itunes, right clicking on the iPhone in the left pane and selecting backup. See iPhone and iPod touch: About backups and Backing up, updating, and restoring your iPhone and iPod touch software for details.

The custom IPSW method is generally quite simple.

Unfortunately we can't link to custom IPSW from this forum as that is unauthorised re-distribution of apple files (not allowed on this forum).

That's why we push pwnagetool (as it allows you to legally create your own custom ipsw)

Many new appstore apps now only support 3.1 or even 3.1.3 in some cases.

Forget blackra1n and blacksn0w. They are both inferior to the devteam's solutions.

Pwnage tool can only be used on a Mac? I'm currently running everything off of a pc.

This would make sense of many of my applications not syncing right.

They're forgotten about. I'm sticking with redsn0w and Ultrasn0w they've never faltered so far.

So which is the latest safest upgrade that there is currently an unlock for ? 3.1.x ?

I need to create a Custom IPSW some how to keep my phone unlockable? Is there any information about how to to do this on the dev team blog in previous posts from a while ago? Or can I simply use a PC friendly version of pwnage tool? if there is one?

I'd basically like to upgrade as well as keep my unlock and jailbreak. but I'm not entirely sure how to go about doing this without the right resources or information.

Sorry if I daftly overlooked something.

Default Re: Upgrade from iPhone 3.0 to 3.1.2; or no?

Ultrasn0w will unlock 3.1.x as long as you restore with a custom. 3.1.x ipsw and you are currently running 3.0

There is a windows pwnagetool clone but it is not made by the devteam, it is not reccommend by the devteam or by me

    Smile

    Hello.
I'm in the same situation as pluemb (I think). I want to upgrade my OS to 3.1.2, or if not possible, 3.1.3.
I'm now running a jailbroken and unlocked 3G iPhone with OS 3.0 and fw (bb?) 04.26.08.
Is there any "safe" way to upgrade my phone to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 with my PC without bricking it?
A friend who is working abroad has a Mac, should I wait for his return and do this on his mac or can I do it now "safely" on my PC (windows)?

    Grateful for some answers

Best to do it on a mac with PwnageTool. You stay with baseband 04.26.08 and have ability to continue to use ultrasn0w unlock.

There are no tools that will be supported on this forum to do a "safe" custom-ipsw restore/upgrade using windows.
