Default Unlocking and Jailbreaking iPhone 2g with 3.1.2 firmware

Now, this is kind of complicated (in my opinion) so I'm just going to explain the situation from the beginning.

A friend of mine purchased an iPhone 2g from 'someone', I have no idea who, and it appears it already came jailbroken and unlocked, as it had some programs like "BSD Subsystem", "Installer", "Summer Board", etc. Everything worked, he could detect and use wireless networks to browse the internet / YouTube, he could make calls no problem, photos, everything.

Now, a couple of weeks ago, he informs me that he can no longer access wireless network. We make sure that WiFi is turned on and we try in several areas with WiFi networks: My university, my house, some hotel lobbies. No networks can be found in any place. YouTube obviously doesn't work, and Safari states "Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the Internet".

His iPhone had the 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 firmware, one of the two, I can't recall which. I thought that perhaps updating the firmware to the newest release might do the trick. I upgraded it to 3.1.2, and since I used my computer (since all the music and applications that were on it had been put, I assume, by the guy that sold him the iPhone), and it told me that I would have to delete all the data to update it. I did, and it deleted everything.

Now, I assume that because the phone 'reset', that it is no longer jailbroken and unlocked. Am I correct in assuming this? I ask because I put a SIM card of mine to restore it, I used blackra1n to jailbreak the iPhone, but I had no service even with my SIM card - I'm not familiar at all with how unlocking iPhones works, but I assume that unlocking means you allow the phone to use SIM cards to make calls, right?

Now, I have been told that to unlock the phone, I have to go into blackra1n in the iPhone and download Cydia. But I can't do this because the phone still doesn't detect wireless networks.

So before, it didn't detect networks. Now, it still doesn't, and it can't even make calls anymore.

Is there anything I'm overlooking? I've already reset the wireless network settings, still nothing. Is there any thing I can do to access wireless networks so that I can unlock the phone with Cydia?

Thanks, and sorry for the long post.

Is wifi greyed out, do you have a mac address (Settings>General>About)?

It sounds like the iPhone was running OS 1.x previously. There were some bad unlocks for 2G on OS 1.x some of these worked fine until the baseband was upgraded.

What information is reported under Settings>General>About for wifi, bluetooth and IMEI?

Generally, for unlock.. don't use blackra1n, restore and jailbreak again with redsn0w 0.9beta3 [iPhone Dev Team] as it bundles the unlock for the 2G in the jailbreak.

OK, thanks for the reply. In Settings > General > About, Wi-Fi Address is 00:1C:B3:26: D9:95. Bluetooth is 00:1C:B3:26: D9:94, and IMEI is 01 1301XX XXXXXX X. I don't see anything that mentions MAC Address under Settings > General > About.

I will try redsn0w 0.9, can I use it with the 3.1.2 firmware or do I have to restore to an earlier firmware (if that's possible)?

The wifi address and bluetooth addresses are also referred to as MAC address. They all look fine/normal - I have commented out your IMEI, it is not a good idea to publish that online.

    Redsn0w 0.9 redsn0w 0.9 [iPhone Dev Team] works with iPhone OS 3.0 or 3.1.2 I recommend you use 3.1.2

A 2G guide for redsn0w 0.8 is located here: iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your iPhone 2G on OS 3.0.x Using RedSn0w (Windows) redsn0w 0.9 is pretty much the same (just works with OS 3.1.2 also)

If you still have wifi problems after unlocking with bootneuter, then the best thing to do is to downgrade to OS 1.1.4 and use iLiberty plus to try and fix the wifi.

Thanks a lot man, I'm gonna try redsn0w 0.9 right now since I have 3.1.2 and if that doesn't work, I'll go to 1.1.4 and try iLiberty like you said.

I have no idea what the IMEI thing does, but thanks for editting it out.

    Thanks again.

The IMEI is just a code unique to your mobile.

I followed the instructions on http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4302 but redsn0w would crash immediately after I loaded the ispw file and clicked "Next". I thought it was because I was in a 64bit Windows 7, but I tried it on a 32bit Windows XP and it crashed at the same time.

    Any ideas?

    Are you using redsn0w 0.9 ? I tested redsn0w 0.9 beta on windows 7 x64 and it worked fine with OS 3.1.2
