i think i have the first iphone, although im really not too sure!
but i dont think it works for the 3rd generation.

<how can u tell what generation iphone you have?>
i bought mine second hand from my friend early last year. does that help?
It doesn't matter which generation it is, but the actual firmware installed on the phone. If it's running OS 3.0 (Settings -> General -> About -> Version) then iSIM won't run.

Well if it is truly a 2G (Rev. 1) phone, then there is nothing stopping you from carefully downgrading to 1.1.4 OS to run this app. You can always restore back to 3.0.1 afterwards.

I have just installed iSIM 1.0.8 on my 3.0.1 iPhone, tried all the tricks i could find to convince a pre 2.x app to run. Nothing worked.

I assume you're trying to make it so you can use the SIM in another phone. Your best bet is either a direct transfer to the SIM using a SIM card writer, export your vcards from Addressbook to the phone via bluetooth, then save them to the SIM card (or not).

iFunbox is a good app for transferring contacts from your phone. I use this from a few days and it runs smooth in my phone. Make it a try.

I would not entirely agree, the 3Gs looks almost identical to the 3G. Only the 2G looks different.

You are better off distinguishing by features. The following links outline the differences between the three iPhone models feature wise. Main Page - The iPhone Wiki

There is no program for 3.x firmware to do this.

If you are trying to do this to transfer your contacts to another phone you will need to sync your contacts from your iPhone to your computer and then use software that can sync the contacts back to your other phone.

This requires some way of connecting your other phone to your PC (bluetooth, or USB are most common)

On the mac this can be done with iSync for many phone models.
Have there been any new programs in the last 10 months that allow direct transfer of your Iphone contacts to a sim card?

    Thanks
