    Default Tethering iPhone 3.1.3

I am on a locked AT&T iPhone. I do not want to jailbreak and am trying to enable Internet Tethering. I have not had any success with the ipcc files and I am willing to work with anyone to try to figure out how Apple changed the APN's for AT&T.

I am under the impression Tethering is a separate APN because if you look at this URL iPhone: About Cellular Data Network settings (viewing or editing the APN) Apple shows a separate APN category for tethering and at the bottom, say basically it's only available with 3.1.3 on an authorized, unlocked carrier.

I also have successfully upgraded and downgraded between 3.1.x to 3.0.x WITHOUT deleting any settings. Nearly everything remains intact and if I can get some help I am more than willing to make a tutorial to this effect.

    Thanks

    Are you jailbroken?

For OS 3.1 and higher, it is impossible to enable tethering on AT&T without first jailbreaking.

Tethering patches are available for 3G on OS 3.1.2, you need to apply this. Then you need to modify your carrier bundle to enable tethering. This is all documented elsewhere on this forum.

As for 3.1.3, some tethering patches have been ported to this OS, you again need to be jailbroken. The patches from 3.1.2 can't be used, you need ported/updated patches. Search for this.

OS 3.0 does not require tethering patches, just the correctly edited carrier bundle.

I am under the impression from working extensively with these .ipcc files that Apple just changed the APN and I am trying to figure out which one it is. You only say it's impossible because no one has yet figured out how to do it without jailbreaking. I don't wish to jailbreak and I don't intend to. Apple has obviously added a 4th APN for tethering to the iPhone 3.1.3 software, and I'm trying to figure out what it is. I am fully aware of the methods of enabling tethering by jailbreaking and I am avoiding them.

No Apple added an encryption option to the APN field in 3.1. This means it will ignore any APN without a valid digital signature that matches the apn value.

The tethering patch removes this check for a valid signature. This takes it back to the OS 3.0 way.

In addition you need to set the type mask correctly in the ipsw.

I see. So the new signature field that appeared in the ipcc files is actually an AT&T encryption key Apple provided them which they'll release (if they ever) decide to allow official tethering on the iPhone.

    Thanks for clearing that up.
