Question stuck at itunes activation window

FWIW i'm on a MAC, but can run P.C. if there are better tools.

    i have a previously jb/ul 2g phone.

i needed to revirginize and JB/UL. but, the old way of JB/UL 3.0 has been updated to JB/UL 3.1.3.

    following the erroneous instructions:

iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your iPhone 2G on OS 3.1.3 Using RedSn0w (Mac) (Comments)

as the erroneous instructions state, i loaded the 3.1.3 firmware (should have loaded 3.1.2). this now yields the infamous error 1601, iphone not recognized when put into DFU mode. attempts to use the usual escape from 16XX error method always take me to the itunes activation menu when i have an ATT sim in, or the 'wrong sim inserted' message otherwise.

i don't have a good way to get to the restore menu now to load 3.1.2 to follow the proper procedure.

i'm a bit stuck. anyone have any ideas how to load 3.1.2 now?

    thanks.

There can be a couple of reasons for 1601. First try the procedure listed here. http://support.apple.com/kb/TA38633

Also - nothing wrong with 3.1.3 on a 2G, my first generation iPhone runs this iOS version fine.

Otherwise, please pastebin the restore log.

    thanks for the link.

first though, i wasnt implying anything is wrong with 3.1.3. but, the instructions should have had me load 3.1.2 first then upg to 3.1.3 (that's what the screenshots show...it just has the wrong ipsw linked at the top of the page).

i'm still tinkering using a different computer/install of itunes to get rid of the 16xx error. i'm just wondering if there's an easy way to bypass the apple activation menu to get to the restore button at this point.

    thanks again.

Force the iPhone into DFU or recovery mode http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/54082.htm and you can restore...

As you are on OS X, I really recommend pwnagetool. I find it much better than redsn0w. iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your iPhone 2G on OS 3.1.3 Using PwnageTool (Mac)

The only disadvantage (I see it as an advantage) with pwnagetool is that it only allows restores - not upgrades. This means you lose anything that you can't sync to your iPhone (SMS history, app settings etc). This is mostly an advantage when jumping up major iOS releases as you get rid of junk that can cause your iPhone to run poorly. If you know what you are doing you can manually restore selective files like SMS history from a backup taken prior to the restore.

The process is to load 3.1.3 and then use a 3.1.2 IPSW with redsn0w to jailbreak.

This procedure was lazily updated from 3.1.2 to 3.1.3 and they haven't fixed the screenshots or the text properly. I have reported this to iclarified (months ago) but it seems like this will never be fixed.

The general procedure with redsn0w is that it works on the iOS version it was released for and also any with all bugfix releases that come afterwards.

For example, redsn0w 0.8 worked with 3.0 and also 3.0.1
Redsn0w 0.9.2 worked with 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 (same rules for also betas 0.9.3 and 0.9.4)
    Redsn0w 0.9.5 worked with 4.0, 4.0.1 and 4.0.2

In each case, you always need to provide redsn0w with an IPSW from the first iOS version it was designed to work with. So for redsn0w 0.9.2 - you must always give redsn0w a 3.1.2 IPSW
