Default Stuck on Apple logo. Restore without data loss.

Hi, I have an iPhone 3G with 3.1.2 firmware jailbroken with blackra1in. Yesterday the phone suddenly crashed (while using google maps) and won't boot anymore. It's stuck on the Apple logo loop. I put it on recovery mode and tried booting with blackra1in but it didn't work. I believe the cause is one of the updates of some Cydia package I did a couple of days ago.

I found out how to put in recovery mode and restore it to factory settings, but I don't want to lose my precious data. I don't really care if I lose the jailbroken status and applications or get the phone upgraded to the latest firmware. All I want to do is get my pictures, SMS and contacts out and safe.

    I have tried this:
Mostly iPhone hacking: Data recovery: not just for iBoot-pwned devices
But after making the .ipsw file but don't know what to do next. The only option I have on iTunes is to "restore"... If I do a restore won't all my data be gone forever? I heard there's some "Retore from back up function" but I don't get that option as I've never backuped anything with iTunes. How do I manually chose a backup (.ipsw file) to restore from? And what exactly is in this ipsw file?? Are my SMS and contacts in there? I have also been told it doesn't work for 3G but was able to make the .ipsw without any error messages (but the file size is smaller than the original firmware which I found a bit suspicious).

    Now I'm trying this:
Mostly iPhone hacking: Working iPhone recovery ramdisk with SSH ;-)
I'm having some trouble understanding this whole ramdisk thing but I'll see if can solve my problem..

Is there any other method of restoring my phone WITHOUT losing my data (pictures, SMS and contacts)? Note I have never backup anything with iTunes.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The "Data Recovery: not just for iBoot-pwned devices" should work.
The whole point of that procedure is to swap the "upgrade" and "restore" ramdisks, so when you do a "restore" in iTunes, you actually do an "upgrade" - which does not wipe your existing data.

You actually have plenty of options because you have a 3G and are pwned.

BTW: bit stupid to never sync with iTunes, backup is automatic.. you should have used it. I know I don't sync every day, but it isn't hard to sync once a week or so.

Thanks a lot for the reply!

I know it may sound very stupid, but what exactly should I do after the custom IPSW file is made? When I connect the iPhone to iTunes it only gives me this "Restore" option and if I try to use it it warns me all me data will be gone. Should I just ignore that and restore?
I read the steps on this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414
and it seems I can choose a "backup" to get data from during the last step of the restore process. However, how can I choose the newly made custom IPSW file?
And again, how can I be sure my SMS, contacts and pictures are in that IPSW file? I mean, considering I had a few gigabyte of music on the iPhone so I assume that at least the music is not there (I don't really care about the music itself, but this means not all user-made files have been backed up).

And yeah, I'll definitely backup things as soon as I get this solved!

    EDIT:
Ok, I just found out all I need to do is hold SHIFT while clicking the "restore" button. But still, is there any away to confirm 100% that my data is in that IPSW file I made?

Your data is NOT in that IPSW file you made (but that is not the point)

The only difference between Upgrade and Restore is that Upgrade does not wipe the user data area.

As explained earlier, the "Data recovery: not just for iBoot-pwned devices" makes an IPSW that uses the "upgrade" ramdisk/script when you shift-click on "restore" in iTunes and browse to the IPSW you made.

    Thanks for the info!

Ok, I know understand the situation a bit better, but as I had been told (by msft.guy) the data recovery method didn't work out for my 3G. I got an error (14).

So now I'm trying to the ramdisk SSH method but I'm not sure which IPSW I should use now... I have managed to upload the 3.1.2 restore ramdisk with iRecovery but got stuck on the steps following.. I'll try figuring out things here..
But my question is: Assuming the data recovery method (attempt to upgrade to FW 4.1) didn't work, I should still be able to use the 3.1.2 restore ramdisk, right? Or by any chance should I try it with FW 4.1? (because of my attempt to "upgrade" using the data recovery method).

By the way, before trying the data recovery method I was stuck at the Apple logo but now when I turn on the phone it goes straight to recovery mode.

As you have a 3G, there is no SHSH - so you can always upload an older iBSS and ramdisk.

I've finally figured out how to access my iPhone through SSH, mounted the volumes and all the data I need seems to be there. I'm trying to backup ALL the files from the iPhone using this FileZilla software (for some reason WinSCP wouldn't login).
However it's still downloading this "rdisk0s2" and "rdisk0" files and both of them have been downloading for 3 hours and are each of them is more than 8 GB large already (my iPhone is a 16GB model). Plus, there's still 50000+ files queued to download...
So my question is: What exactly are those two files? Are they some sort of disk image? Do they contain the same things as folders mnt1 and mnt2? Should I just cancel the download of those two files and download just mnt1 and mnt2 folders? Btw, on the iPhone those two files show up as 0 byte files...

    Thanks!

The rdisk entries are special files that represent the raw disk - so yes the result of copying these are disk images of your OS and media partition. You only need media partition image - it will be the same size as your iPod/iPhone minus 0.5-1GB (which is used by the os partition)

Also If you know what files you need and they were not deleted you can just copy them directly.

    Default Stuck on Apple Logo

My iphone 4 running 4.1 is stuck on the Apple logo screen.

I dont want to restore because I have some pictures and videos of my 2yr old son I shot few hours before this happend and havent syncd with itunes.

I have read some posts that if one "upgrades", it doesnt affect the videos and pictures/sms etc. Is this true? If so, can I just download a 4.1 ipsw file from the web and use "shift"+restore, select the file to bring my device back to life without loosing my pictures?

I'm not worried on loosing my jailbreak and apps, just more concernd about these pictures.

    Anyhelp is appreciated.

You normally cannot ""upgrade" to the same version that you already run. However this method explains how to do so. Mostly iPhone hacking: Data recovery: not just for iBoot-pwned devices

Do you rely on unlock via ultrasn0w? (i'm not sure as you run 4.1 and haven't mentioned that) - if so you will still need to use TinyUmbrella for the upgrade
