I put it on recovery mode and tried booting with blackra1in but it didn't work. I believe the cause is one of the updates of some Cydia package I did a couple of days ago.

I found out how to put in recovery mode and restore it to factory settings, but I don't want to lose my precious data. I don't really care if I lose the jailbroken status and applications or get the phone upgraded to the latest firmware. All I want to do is get my pictures, SMS and contacts out and safe.

    I have tried this:
Mostly iPhone hacking: Data recovery: not just for iBoot-pwned devices
But after making the .ipsw file but don't know what to do next. The only option I have on iTunes is to "restore"... If I do a restore won't all my data be gone forever? I heard there's some "Retore from back up function" but I don't get that option as I've never backuped anything with iTunes. How do I manually chose a backup (.ipsw file) to restore from? And what exactly is in this ipsw file?? Are my SMS and contacts in there? I have also been told it doesn't work for 3G but was able to make the .ipsw without any error messages (but the file size is smaller than the original firmware which I found a bit suspicious).

    Now I'm trying this:
Mostly iPhone hacking: Working iPhone recovery ramdisk with SSH ;-)
I'm having some trouble understanding this whole ramdisk thing but I'll see if can solve my problem..

Is there any other method of restoring my phone WITHOUT losing my data (pictures, SMS and contacts)? Note I have never backup anything with iTunes.

Thanks in advance for any help!
I used the first method you mentioned here i.e. the "Data recovery-...", I downloaded the ipsw from apple and used the file to convert it from a "restore" to an "upgrade" ver using Mostly iPhone hacking: Data recovery: not just for iBoot-pwned devices. After that I had to just hold down the "alt" key while clicking on the "restore" button on itunes and it let me select the ipsw file to use. I choose this converted "UPG.....ipsw" file, it warned me that I'd loose all the data - I crossed my fingers and clicked yes and lo and behold, after about 20 mins my iphone was upgraded and all my photos were intact.

You are the best msftguy!! You saved me of more than 500 pictures on my iphone. Well lesson learned, sync the device regularly .

hi, i have a iphone 3G as well, and have lost my backups and am trying to us the Data Recovery method in order to preserve my data on the phone. I have created my ipsw, went into DFU mode, and pressed shift-restore and chose the created IPSW, although i got an error 14, and later on began to get an error 3194. I'm not sure what i need to do to get this to work. (i have tried firmware 4.1 and 4.2.1)
Thank you Your help would be greatly appreciated

3194 means you need a saved SHSH. Did you use TinyUmbrella, Cydia or iSHSHIT to save your SHSH?
14 means there was likely a problem with the way the IPSW was made.

Default Same problem on iPhone 3G (not jailbroken)

    Hello,

I'm having the following problem on my iPhone 3G (which is not jailbroken): the phone (when turned on) gets stuck on the apple logo for around 25 seconds, then shuts off. This happens every time; it doesn't go past the apple logo screen and always turns off after ~25 seconds.

I can get the phone into recovery mode and DFU mode. However, my main concern here is that I do not want to lose any data. If I understand correctly, msft_guy's tool (which creates a custom IPSW) cannot be used on iPhone 3G. Is this so?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

You need to try and determine why the phone turns off after 25 seconds, as you are not jailbroken - it's possible that you have a very different problem to the one that this thread is designed to solve. Start a new thread and provide more details.

I have created the new thread in the "3G General Talk" forum. Please let me know if that location is OK or if I should create the new thread in this forum. Thank you

The only difference between Upgrade and Restore is that Upgrade does not wipe the user data area.

As explained earlier, the "Data recovery: not just for iBoot-pwned devices" makes an IPSW that uses the "upgrade" ramdisk/script when you shift-click on "restore" in iTunes and browse to the IPSW you made.
Hope you are still around. Will this work in my case, and which method should I try to get my current data back before my Iphone 4 froze?

I have an Iphone 4, on 4.3.2 firmware with Redsnow 0.9.6rc16 jailbreak. Had this for 4 months and everything has been fine. I did some updates in cydia, like 4, and it asked me to reboot. Ever since then, it's stuck on the apple logo. I followed the steps from a YouTube link to "Boot Tethered" from the same redsnow I used 4 months ago, 0.9.6rc16, and it goes through the processes and at the end the sceen on the phone goes white, and then you get a pineapple logo that hangs just as long as the apple logo did before. After I do a hard reset the pineapple logo, doesn' come back, but the apple logo does again, again, and again, after multiple hard resets and hangs.

    So far:

    1. I cannot get iphone explorer or iphone browser to recognize my iphone.
    2. I tried to ssh into it, but I don't think I have ssh installed on my iphone? I can see an IP in my linksys router for my iphone, but still can't connect to it.
    3. I used Redsn0w to boot in tethered mode as mentioned above, did not help.

I DO NOT want to reset my iphone to factory settings, I have a particular contact and some photos that I did not get to backup in a while.

I am wondering is there a way to make iphone explorer or iphone browser recognize my iphone in DFU or recovery mode?

Not sure if I should use a newer jb than the original 0.9.6rc16 that is one the phone when trying that tethered boot?

I'm looking for anything to try, or some way to boot it to get all my current pictures, texts, etc.

I don't think I have ssh installed on the iphone. Can't a custom redsnow be installed that would put ssh on the phone?? Anything?

Yes but depending on how far into boot the hang is, it might not be possible to get this working.
