Default someone check my unlock procedure please??

I have a 3GS that someone else unlocked. It now has 4.1, with 6.15.00 BB, using T-mobile SIM.
I want to install an application that needs 4.3, so looking to update and unlock again.

This is what I understand so far:

    1. Uninstall itunes 10.4.
    2. install itunes 10.2
    3. back up iphone
    4. Use Snowbreeze to create custom 4.3.3
4a. Check box "activate iphone"? Not sure about this step.
    5. Open itunes, shift/click restore, browse to custom Snowbreeze 4.3.3
    6. Install Ultrasnow via Cydia.

Will my phone be ready to use with T-Mobile SIM now?
    Am I missing anything?

    Thanks for any help.

You need to activate during jailbreaking so that you don't get stuck at the 'connect to iTunes screen'. Then, download SAM and SAMPrefs (google if you can't find 'm) and set your SIM card info, then plug back into iTunes to generate legit push certs.

I don't recommend sn0wbreeze, a lot of people are having error 9 and error 10 with it lately, please use redsn0w instead.

I read several times that redsn0w would not preserve the ipad baseband.

Is that no longer the case?

    Thanks!

Don't know where you got the info but it's outdated. I think a LONG time ago, the first versions of redsn0w didn't actually make custom firmware, they just jailbroke the running version of iOS -- so I think that answer is hanging around from then. redsn0w has been able to make custom .IPSW files for a good long while now. Under the 'Extras' option in redsn0w is 'Custom IPSW' which will make a custom no baseband firmware for you.

I cannot find an up-to-date guide on how to use redsn0w, or which version will do what. The most recent guides I can find are to do with fixing an ibooks issue, and do not give instructions for unlocking.

Many of the guides I did find, describe nothing about creating a custom IPSW, the most recent instruct to begin by opening itunes and updating to iOS 5. Everything I have ever read before has stated emphatically to NEVER update with itunes, unless you have a custom IPSW so you can shift/click and select.

I am at a loss in finding recent guides. The most recent that look like they may work, are instructions on updating to 5.01, with a tethered jailbreak. I cannot find a guide for redsn0w that covers everything; creating custom IPSW, restoring to that custom IPSW, and then going on to unlock.

I feel like a dufus, I find "old" guides from the middle of last year, that insist on staying away from redsn0w, or I find tethered jailbreaks to 5.0.1 (with no instructions on unlocking), some of which go through creating a custom IPSW, so of which do not.

Can you tell me what version of redn0w is appropriate (again, posts from 2011 say the correct version for device and firmware is of utmost importance)?
Redsn0w is only going to jailbreak correct? Then I have to use ultrasnow or the SAM that you mentioned before phone is unlocked and ready to be used?

Thanks for your patience and help.

It's worth mention that you're rolling a lot of processes into one umbrella that really are not anything more than tangentially related. Unlocking and jailbreaking are ONLY related in that unlocking requires a jailbreak before it can be executed. The jailbreak process itself does not impact unlocking nor does it provide unlocking by default. They are two separate things. Since you've searched and can't seem to find a step by step, I'll give you a reader's digest condensed version of what you need to do now:

    Jailbreaking Process

    1) Download redsn0w 0.9.10b5b from the dev-team's site.
    2) Download the .IPSW for iOS 5.0.1 for your device from iClarified's direct links to Apple's download site (do NOT download it from any other site, do not download a pre-customized firmware)
    3) Run redsn0w, and under Extras, point it at the .IPSW you downloaded.
    4) While in redsn0w, under Extras, click the 'custom firmware' button. Follow the instructions on screen to create the baseband preserving .IPSW
    5) While in redsn0w, under Extras, after the custom firmware is made, click the 'Pwned DFU' button to put your phone into pwned DFU mode.
    6) Open iTunes and shift-restore, pointing to the No_BB firmware that redsn0w just made.

    Unlocking Process
    1) Once the phone has booted and is at the home screen after the restore and jailbreak process, and after you've completed the initial sync, open Cydia and download ultrasn0w.
    2) If you want to generate legitimate push certificates, add repo.bingner.com as a repository in Cydia and download SAM and SAMPrefs
    3) Run SAMPrefs and tell it to 'revert lockdownd to stock', then reboot your phone.
    4) Run SAMPrefs again and tell it to 'deactivate phone', then reboot your phone.
    5) Plug your phone into iTunes. If you get an error about an 'unauthorized SIM', then open SAMPrefs again and manually set the carrier and country of your SIM card, then reboot the phone and try again.

Your phone should be jailbroken, unlocked, and activated.

You're correct that the procedure has changed a lot since you last jailbroke and I appreciate the trepidation when being told to restore directly through iTunes as on previous phones and previous models, this could remove you from the jailbreak train. That is no longer the case (at least not at the moment, though it may change again in the future).

    Thank you!

I remember running into the iclarified site before, but never got any hits this time around when searching, and had forgotten about it. Saw the guide on their site, and have read more guides for redsn0w also, so feel OK about the process now.

If you have some time/patience, can you explain why the create custom ISPW is no longer necessary?

    Many thanks.

Oops, just saw on iclarified that there was a different guide for those wanting to unlock!! (and then needing the custom ISPW)

Well, you are creating a custom .IPSW in blocking the baseband update, but the reason that you can restore directly through iTunes is because of the advent of 'Pwned DFU' mode for newer devices, which allows non-jailbroken devices to boot into a Pwned version of DFU that can accept custom firmwares. Beyond that, since the published untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.x can be performed on the running device using redsn0w, there is no need to customize the .IPSW first and restore it.

But, ultimately you are actually using a custom .IPSW -- and previously, even using older versions of iTunes, once you made the custom .IPSW you'd still use iTunes to restore it, you just never let iTunes directly update the phone. The reason for that was because in iOS 3.x, the only thing keeping the phone jailbroken was the pwned LLB, which would get replaced if you flashed a stock firmware. That's no longer the case, the current jailbreak can jailbreak a never jailbroken phone on 5.0.1 with no issues.

OK, followed instructions using redsn0w on iclarified. Cannot get phone to activate, message that SIM card is invalid (it is a non-official SIM).

itunes restores the custom BB 5.0.1, and reboots phone. I then boot tethered via redsn0w, get pineapple screen, phone then boots again to set-up screen, but I cannot complete setup because it hangs with message that I do not have an official SIM, so phone is not activated.

None of the guides I read before doing this mentioned doing anything special with the SIM card or activation.

So I am now stuck, cannot unlock because I cannot get the phone to boot beyond setup screens

    This is what I did:
    updated itunes
    downloaded redsn0w V0.9.10b5c
used redsn0w to verify that SHSH blobs were backed up.
used f0recast to determine that I had the new bootrom
used redsn0w to create custom ISPW
used redsn0w to to enter PWND DFU
opened itunes - shift-click restore to BB-5.0.1 file
itunes did its thing, and rebooted the phone
re-opened redsn0w, and did "boot only", got pineapple screen
    iphone reboots into setup screen

This is where I am stuck. Unable to do anything because I cannot get phone activated.

Please help me. As near as I can tell I followed the guides to the letter, but do not know how to get phone activated.

    Thank you.
