Question Set iPhone up as New iPhone, but keep SMS History and Call Logs?

Does anyone know if there is a way to wipe the iPhone entirely, reload the base OS, set up as a NEW iPhone, then restore the call logs and SMS history (only, none of the other data)?

As with many other users, I've had my iPhone since 2.0 came out and have been upgrading it with every release. I've also jailbroken several releases of it and that has left a lot of straggling data on the data partition. Doing a restore of the core OS doesn't clear that data out, as evidenced by re-jailbreaking attempts keeping configuration data / preferences, etc.

When 3.0 proper comes out, I'd like to wipe the phone entirely before doing the upgrade, and don't want to restore it from a backup of my previous phones after upgrading it to 3.0. That said, I'm somewhat OCD and do not want to lose my SMS history and call logs after doing this...

I know it's possible to do this if I jailbreak the phone -- then I can just extract the files from an iTunes backup and replace them on the device and reboot, but I'd prefer to not jailbreak if it's not absolutely necessary...

Any ideas? I searched low and high and haven't been able to come up with a way to do this that doesn't involve the jailbreak, but figured that if anyone knew how to do it, they'd probably frequent this forum...

If you have a Mac you could try THIS to extract the SMS & Call logs

I haven't tested on 3.0 but it should work as long as your backups haven't been encrypted with itunes.

You cant add it to your backup but you should be able to SSH into the phone & replace the files with the ones you extracted to install the information on the phone again.

It's times that I see situations like this... that I just smile.

Yea, Apple didn't really intend for you to restore and set up your phone as new but still keep all your old data.

Life sucks, but than you realize that you aren't still using a Samsung SCH-i730.

LOL , you are absolutely correct. Thank goodness I'm not still on my Nokia 5190. I didn't figure there would be an easy way, and was fairly certain there wasn't an Apple sanctioned way, but thought I'd ask nevertheless. Thanks everyone for the feedback!
