Default restore not working-error messages-phone deadish

I bought a craigslist iPhone 3G 3.0 yesterday. It would not work with the goPhone sim. I tried jailbreaking with redsn0w, it and it kept getting stuck on the last part, 'downloading jailbreak data.'

So after trying many different things (ipsw's from different sites, downloading with firefox instead of safari, using different usb connection spots, putting ipsw's in different locations, etc) I figured I should just restore the thing.

I held down option and clicked on restore so I could select ipsw 3.0 instead of having it put on the 3.1 firmware so I could unlock it. Well, it would not restore! I have itunes 8 something, not 9. Could that be the problem? I tried restoring with the ipsw on my desktop, and also in library>itunes>iphone software updates.

The restore begins working and then after a while it stops and here are the various error messages, "The iPhone "Jack's iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (2005)."

I also received the error, "The iPhone "Jack's iPhone" cannot be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to."

Now the iPhone won't do a thing. When you power it on it has the iTunes connector cable picture with an arrow pointing to the iTunes logo.

When I connect to iTunes it says, "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this phone before it can be used with iTunes."

    Any advice would be awesome!

Tried on a different computer and downloaded ipsw from iClarified and it restored! Still 3.0! Maybe I can even get redsn0w to work now!

Error 1015 is often encountered when downgrading firmware. It usually results in the phone being stuc in recovery mode.

You can fix this using iRecovery via this guide.
    Downgrade iPhone 3GS 3.1 to 3.0 (iPhone OS 3.1 to 3.0 Firmware)
Ignore the fact that this guide is for 3GS, the steps I mention below will apply to any iPhone model.

it sounds like you are at step 7 already. Just go through and do steps 8 to 12, you should get your phone booting properly via this method. Then you can jailbreak if necessary at the end.

    Hi guys,

not sure if my case is similar to yours, but it looks like it to me.

somehow iTunes restored my phone to factory settings after prompting a similar error message and now I lost my jailbreak and cydia.

i tried to restore to custom 3.1, but still no cydia. is it becasue of bb 5.11.07?

    thanks for your help

There can be many reasons for this error but the most likely cause is that you need to install the following Microsoft runtime library on your machine.

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)

If you did not work this out from the screen shot. You have to run this from a command prompt. It is not a GUI application.
