Default Question about upgrading and jailbreaking

    Hey everyone!

I'm sorry to be asking this but I am completely new to this. I have an iPhone 3G that I am using on T-Mobile USA. It's currently running 2.2 and I want to upgrade to 3.0 when the tools get released (I'm assuming they still aren't). Do I need to format the iPhone and restore it so that it is locked before I upgrade to 3.0? If so, how do I do that?

    Thanks in advance!

Wait for the new tools. You'll get the answers then

I see that the tools have been released, and I've been reading around and I can't seem to find an answer to my question.

Do I need to restore my phone before I update it to 3.0?

I'm currently running a unlocked/jailbroken iPhone 3G on OS 2.2. If I try to update to 3.0 with it still being jailbroken will that ruin my phone?

If I need to restore it, and I back up my contacts using iTunes. When I upgrade to 3.0 can I restore those contacts to the phone?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jason

Restore to 3.0 in iTunes 8.2, then use RedSn0w and finally unlock it using UltraSn0w. And that's it.

Read carefully and follow this tutorial: How to Jailbreak Your iPhone on OS 3.0 Using RedSn0w (Windows)

How to Unlock the iPhone 3G Using UltraSn0w

    Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm trying to run ultrasn0w and it is asking me to "locate the corresponding IPSW for your CURRENT firmware" What is this and where is it located on my computer?

The IPSW for your current firmware is the firmware image of the firmware your iPhone is currently running. E.g., if you're running 3.0, pick the firmware image that corresponds to that.

Assuming your Windows installation is on drive C:, you can find the firmware file that you used to upgrade your device in one of the following locations:

    Windows XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates

    Windows Vista / 7:
    C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\

The specific filename will be something like this:
    iPhone1,2_3.0.1_7A341_Restore.ipsw

and will have a filesize of somewhere around 250MB.

thanks for the help nickname I have a mac though. I tried looking in the itunes folder and there was no such subfolder called iPhone updates. I even did a search for an .ipsw file and none existed. Do you know where it is. I carefully read the tutorial that was posted but that seems to only talk about unlocking the phone. I'm still trying to get to that point. I need the ipsw file

Nvm, I found it. It was under Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates

The first tutorial is about RedSn0w. Step one says:

Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0wfrom here or here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 3.0 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.

    3.0.0 (3G): iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

Extract the RedSn0w zip file to the Pwnage folder.

    Did you get those files?

The iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw file is the one that RedSn0w needs
