Default Please Help With iPhone 3G Restore, 3 Days Worth Of Work

Hi All, I apologize in advance for the long post and hope I am not too annoying to the community. I have been all over the internet at every website I could find trying to find a solution to the issue I am having with my iPhone 3G (I am a Windows 7 user). Please, I beg of you, do not simply post "go back to the Apple Store" or "it's a hardware failure" because I have invested too much time to accept those answers. this iPhone is no longer under warranty, so I am pretty much stuck with fixing this myself.

I have checked many tutorials, videos, forums and everything all over the different Jailbreaking/IOS/Apple/iPhone sites and I am by no means an expert at any of this so please bare with me. Find the issues I am having below and my attempts to resolve the issue.

    Major Issues:
    - Phone is stuck in "EMERGENCY CALL" / RESTORE NEEDED screen.
    - SLEEP/POWER button is broken....literally....broken off, no way of pressing it.
    - When attempting to restore through iTunes, receive Error Code (23) UNKNOWN ERROR which from what I have read is a very bad one.
    - Cannot enter DFU mode due to the missing power button and I have tried auto DFU app's such as Ziphone however I constantly receive error "USBMuxListenerCreate: No error" which prevents the app from connecting to the iPhone at all.

Applications I have used/tried, learning as I go:

    redsn0w
    sn0wbreeze
    iLiberty+
    winpwn
    iREB
    Tiny Umbrella
    Quickpwn
    Ziphone
    Spirit
    f0rcast
    blackra1n
    limera1n

The only application that didn't require the DFU mode and (supposedly) ran successfully was "blackra1n" however it did not produce any different results. Sn0wbreeze would error with "invalid IPSW" file no matter which one I chose (it's supposedly does not require DFU), so I could not get a single IPSW to load.

So, to simplify my request, here is what I would love to have answered:

    1. Does anyone know how to solve the iTunes error 23?
    2. Does anyone know of another way to enter DFU mode without a power button?
    3. Does anyone know how to solve the "USBMuxListenerCreate: No error" error when attempting to DFU?

    Thanks so much in advance.

    -Rob

BTW...if someone has concluded definitely that this is a hardware issue, I would appreciate it if you could specify what hardware you believe is defective so that I can look at pricing replacement parts, since I am out of warranty as it is. Thanks!

Apple does offer an out-of-warranty replacement service. It's not free but if you have put so much value into the phone, maybe it's worth it.

These are two different screens, which one is it actually stuck at? Normally neither of these are a major issue - especially on a 3G.

Third party repair shops can fix this pretty easily and cheaply.

No this is not a bad error, normally it means your iPhone isn't properly prepared for restoring a custom IPSW.

ziphone has always been bad news and should never be used.
It simply doesn't work on iOS 2.x, 3.x or 4.x (which is a good thing)

There are at least two other ways to enter DFU on a 3G.

Hi Olethros, thanks so much for responding, having browsed the hackint0sh forums a bit, you seem like a good, fair moderator who is very active and that is always appreciated. As far as a follow up to your remarks, please see below. Thanks again! (sorry for not using the QUOTE function)

    **Warranty**
Unfortunately price is a major concern, this is a project phone I got for free from my bro (which WAS working a few days ago).

    **EMERGENCY CALL/RESTORE NEEDED screen**
I actually have 2 screens, the first says "Restore Needed..." with the ITUNES logo and data cable, then I can SWIPE to the side and see the EMERGENCY call screen however I have "Searching..." for service (there is no SIM card inserted at this time). I can arrow back to the "Restore Needed..." screen whenever I want, the phone is not locked up.

    **POWER BUTTON**
I have actually opened my phone with help from YOUTUBE videos and I may order the replacement part for this, it's only $5 or so.

    **ITUNES ERROR**
I am so very sorry for the confusion, I fat fingered the Error Code, it is actually ERROR (23) UNKNOWN ERROR NOT twenty one. I have read in a lot of places that this could be a terminal error code for the 3G. Again, I apologize.

    **DFU MODE**
I have tried the DFU command line included with the iBrickr set of applications and returned the same error as ZiPhone, any other options?

    Thanks again Olethros.

On this screen, there should be a button with an i in a circle.

If you click on this, and can view an IMEI (and it's not the default IMEI), then you are probably okay.

It definitely can be an unfixable error. I'd need to see your restore log http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/130802.htm

The tools you are using are all iOS 1.x apps and are designed for the iPhone 2G, the iPhone 3G never ran iOS 1.x

Yes there are other options. The one I would recommend requires a mac/pwnagetool.

There is an existing thread for your problem. http://www.hackint0sh.org/f203/104422.htm The bad news, I'm 100% you can't fix this via software.
