Default Jailbreak Iphone 3g without original sim

hey guys I'm new to the forum, sorry if this is in the wrong place

basically i've been offered my cousins iphone 3g, due to the fact he has upgraded to a 3gs. he lives in australia, i live in the uk so i know i'm going to have to jailbreak it to unlock it and get it to work

the iphone has never been jailbreaked or unlocked before

only problem is, he is using the same sim on his new phone and needs it for his work therefore he cannot send it to me, i cant even borrow it because it would take too long to send between each other

my question is will i be able to jailbreak and activate the iphone without his original sim card? and if so how?

really just want to know if it would be worth my time and effort, or if it will request the original sim on itunes and prevent me from using it. any help would be greatly appreciated

meant to ask, would it work if i purchased a sim card for the same network my cousin is on, just for the purposes of jailbreaking it?

to clarify it would be the same network but an entirely different sim card, but is that all itunes needs to confirm i'm using a compatable sim. Or does itunes know the exact sim you should be using

eg if it was locked to o2 in the uk, could i get a pay as you go o2 sim to "trick" itunes into thinking my phone is on the right sim, then jailbreak it

Australia offers legitimate unlocking of iPhones. He should enquire about getting the 3G unlocked (it may cost a small amount) before he sends it to you.

An officially unlocked iPhone is really worth the effort and reasonable cost.

First off thanks for the speedy reply

That's great news and solves one problem. I will get him to unlock the phone at his end, and then it will work with my o2 (non iphone) contract I assume (after it has been jailbreaked)

Earlier this year I bought a cheap Iphone online only to discover the imei has been banned in the uk (it was only 100 but lesson learned, clearly too good to be true)

Part of the deal is that I send my cousin is a send him the iphone 3g that i have so his girlfriend can use it, and we've got two working iphones instead of one.

Now my question, the iphone i bought came with had no sim card, it has not been unlocked or jailbroken (never bothered once i turned it on and discovered it was barred) I have heard you need the original sim to restore/jailbreak the iphone. I assume i could buy a compatible o2 sim card (pay as you go) for the sole purpose of updating it on itunes, before he jailbreaks it for his girlfriend to use

Does itunes request the original sim, or just a compatable sim that the network is locked to (O2 only in UK)?

I would have thought itunes just needs confirmation you are using a compatible sim (eg O2) and does not check for the original sim, which as i mentioned i do not have

    Any help again, much appreciated

It does not need the original SIM. To activate legitimately your cousin needs any o2 sim. He will then need to jailbreak and unlock.

Alternatively he can hacktivate during jailbreak and get someone else who can legitimately activate to donate a legitimate unique set of certificates. This allows proper functioning of push notifications, YouTube and the locate me function which all are set up during proper activation. Hacktivation cannot always set all of these items up (especially push which requires unique certificates from Apple).

These push certificates do not need to come from an o2 SIM. In fact, it is possible that he can use his other iPhone to generate a second set of unique certificates.

ok, so i've got my cousins australian iphone. i have managed to jailbreak it to 3.1.2 but i have a problem

i cant connect to my home wi-fi. it finds available networks, prompts me to put in my password but then says cant connect

i know it can connect because when i was jailbreaking it i couldnt get online to get cydia, but when i took it round to my mates, it connected on his wi fi no bother.

tried restoring it but that didnt work

3g works and i can make and recieve calls

any ideas whats the problem. do you think its my router settings?

There have been reports that for some people only unsecured and WEP encryption work. Not WPA or WPA2. This may be an incompatibilty between the 3.1.2 OS or the baseband and some router's firmware.

Try to disable encryption, see if that works, try to set only WEP on and see if that works. If so look for an update to your router's firmware.
