Default iPhone OS 3.1 enforcing Exchange device encryption, only supported by iPhone 3GS

I just saw this article about Exchange encryption.

I use my iPhone 2G with OS 3.0 for my work email, if I can and have been using it does it mean I don't have encryption enforced by my Exchange admin? What am I looking at if I upgrade to OS 3.1?

    It means no encryption yes.
If it is a personally owned device then ask for a new activesync policy to be created for you and others in the same boat. Be creative and get a business case put through to the ICT team.

If it is a supplied device: upgrade time.

Anyone know if this is something that some really smart guy out there will be ultimately be able to hack, or if this means sticking with 3.0 forever on a 3G?

    Bump...

Any smart hacker out there figured out how to make the newer firmwares "lie" about whether the device supports encryption? Or is this impossible without access to source code?

I have no hacking kung-fu so am depending on someone somewhere to say whether this is something that is possible and worth waiting for, or if I should just give up... now....
