Default iPhone 3G wont connect to WiFi [fresh restore to 3.1.3]

Hi there, I just restored a 3G (3.1.2) to 3.1.3 cause the device wouldn't join any WiFi network, it would always say "Unable to connect <wifiname>".

Now I've restored to 3.1.3, used Spirit to JB, and when I try to go to Cydia for unlock, I have the same problem, it just won't connect to my WiFi network. I've tested different iPhones (3G, 3GS and 4) on my network and they all connect.

So, Now I have a locked 3G that won't connect to WiFi therefor cannot be unlocked atm.

Any help would be *GREATLY* appreciated.

When you go into Settings -> General -> About, are your IMEI and MAC address shown?
The preceding forum post has been brought to you by the letter "N" and the number 42.

Thanks but.. is there anything I can do related to the WiFi problem? that was the main reason why I restored in the first place..

Could it be hardware failure? it detects every WiFi available in the area but won't join any of them, giving the same error to all: "Unable to join <name> network".

There was a recent thread about OpenSSH and the SBSettings plugin causing problems joining wifi networks. This seemed to be particularly a problem with open (unencrypted) wifi access points.

The problem is there are many different causes for wifi problems so we can't give you any recommendations without a lot more info.

A syslog of your iPhone booting up, trying to enable wifi and also a syslog of your iPhone trying to log on to a network might help.

Also some more history.. Did you use blacksn0w unlock? Did you reset network settings at all? What baseband version are you running right now?

How can I record all this logs? Will do as soon as I know how to.

It was on 3.1.2.. Was unlocked using blackra1n I think.. One day started to give problems when joinning any WiFi.. So I installed 3.1.3 on it to see it that would solve the problem, jailbroke it with Spirit and when tried to join my network to install ultrasn0w I realized the problem was still there.

I did reset network settings severaltimes with no luck.

The person who uses this phone has no data plan, so without WiFi its practically just a regular phone.

    Modem firmware: 05.12.01 (current)

Blackra1n is NOT an unlock: when you jailbreak with blackra1n it includes an option to install blacksn0w - which is an unlock.

Your problem might be caused by blacksn0w.

See System Log - The iPhone Wiki and Wifi Problems - The iPhone Wiki

    basic summary:

Restore and jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.2 or Pwnagetool 3.1.5 (this is because Spirit doesn't enable the ability to write to the whole iPhone filesystem over USB)

install SBSettings and install Syslog Toggle from Cydia. If you don't have wifi then you may need to use an offline method for installing these apps. Try using Cyder (if you run windows) to do this. If you are on mac, use pwnagetool's ability to pre-install Cydia packages into the custom IPSW.

Then turn on Syslog, restart the phone and also try to connect to a network.

The only real solution I can think of if this problem is caused by blacksn0w is to reflash your baseband. As you have updated to 05.12.10 you may be too late to apply this fix. Check out these posts and adapt them for 3.1.3 /3G

There are blog posts on other sites that include download links for the baseband files. I would advise ignoring these. For three reasons.

    1. You can never trust that the download is what it claims to be
    2. They mostly link to baseband files for 05.11.07 which are useless to you.
    3. It's against the rules of this forum to link to illegally distributed apple copyright files.
