    Is anyone working on this anymore? Hopefully once the rave for MMS on the iPhone 2g wears out, people will come back to trying to get his going.

    there must be some way to get tethering to work. Just think of MMS, some smart people made it possible on that field.

    iPhone 2G and 3G are not really different from a hardware point of view.

    let's hope someone get's this done soon
    Thinkpad T60 (USB-HD 10.5.8)
    iPhone Classic/2G 3.1.2 with tethering enabled

    I hate to go on a rant about this, but instead of hoping someone else figures it out, get involved, start reading and learn. If everyone took this stance that they'll just wait for someone else to do it nothing would ever get done. GET INVOLVED!

    My advice would be to look in _MIS_is_available in USBEthernetSharing.

    Code:
    usbeth_start_sharing:247 _MISIsServiceAvailable calims sharing is disabled
    cailms = claims ?

    I think this is going to be impossible -- at least via Bluetooth -- because when one pairs a 2G iPhone with a Mac, the option to "use device as a network port" isn't displayed, and that is necessary.

    That's exactly the thing we would like to enable...

    I used to have an aircard that worked for 2G and 3G. When no 3G service was available it would pick up Edge. What happens if there is no 3G service available for the iPhone? Perhaps someone with a 3G can test tethering somewhere without 3G service and see if tethering works? If so, we know it's simply settings of some type and not that it's specifically looking for a 3G connection.

    The official Apple docs only recommends a 3G connection (
    iPhone 3G: System requirements for Internet tethering) but I don't have any real life experience.

    The pairing of a 2G iPhone via Bluetooth is impossible atm, because the bluetooth stack of the 2G does not have the PAN profile onboard (iPhone and iPod touch: Supported Bluetooth profiles). In-game peer-to-peer connections also require the PAN profile.

    This guy's blog post seems to indicate that it works with EDGE as well:

    EDGE Tethering on AT&T with iPhone 3G OS 3.0 | The Tabor Consulting Group

    So that should mean that the built-in tethering has the functionality to work with 2G phones. If I'm not mistaken, the 3G chip was an add-on and not a replacement, so we should have the same EDGE hardware between the 2G and 3G phones.
