I have installed iSoft's iModem on my 2G, this works flawlessly and has me thinking that one of the problems we are running into is computer side. iModem installs a daemon on the iPhone, however software needs to be running on the PC as well.

For 3G/3GS users that have tethered, what is running on your PC when you are connected? Is iTunes required to be running, I have only seen guides to connect via bluetooth so I am little unclear on the whole process.

My WM phone was so much easier to manipulate (I know, this is a given)!

Did you install iModem on an iPhone with OS 3.0? I tried installing it, but it constantly gives me the error, "iPhone OS not supported".

Go to Cydia, install FWChanger, change your FW to 2.0. Reboot your phone. Install the iModem daemon and make sure it connects and works. Change your FW back to 3.0 (you will have to do this as a custom FW). Reboot your phone. You are now using 3.0 and iModem. Don't expect super speeds, but certainly is fast enough to cruise the forums and check email.

Sure, you can get iModem or PDANet to do this for you. That's not the point of this discussion thread, guys. Tethering has been possible for over a year; we are trying to figure out how to use the built-in tethering of OS 3.0 on a 2G iPhone.

I don't think running certain software on the computer would be required. If it was, it would also be required when tethering a 3G iPhone.

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

I think it has more to do with the device driver, I could be mistaken, but there must be something on the computer side that is causing the tethering option to disappear when connected.

So far people have been looking at the plists and the misd on the 2G and 3G, I think we might be stuck until the 3GS is jailbroken.

    Some Screen Shots:

Nice screen shots. I know it's off topic, but I don't have the MMS options on my phone. Does it work on yours?

MMS doesn't work on 2G iPhones just like tethering doesn't.

But tethering works on the 3G, right? Without any different device drivers on the computer. So a jailbroken 3GS probably wouldn't add information we don't already have from the working tethering on the 3G.

I still think it was easier for Apple to program a check on the existence of a 3G connection into misd on the phone, than into a driver on the computer. And it's easier for an iPhone process to change the settings menu back to normal, than for a driver that doesn't even run on the phone itself. We simply have to wait for someone who analyzes misd and devises the right patch.
