Hey everyone. I just recently found my old iPhone 2G and jailbroken it to 4.2 firmware (whited00r's custom ipsw) and so I've been reading up a lot of posts online about the iPhone 2G tethering and I've gotten more confused than ever. Is it possible to tether the iPhone 2g? If so, is it possible to tether without connecting to a laptop just so the phone itself uses EDGE? If that's possible, would it work by using a prepaid Tmobile sim? Thank you very much to whoever responds.

I don't think 4.x firmware exists for the iPhone 2G. Are you sure what you're saying is true?
    iPhone 3GS / 3.1.2 JB (PwnageTool) / 04.26.08 carrier-locked, Carrier Logo Fixer / Cydia / 1000 posts on Hackint0sh

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

The 4.x firmware doesn't exist for the iPhone 2G (outside of Apple's test labs).

whited00r is a tweaked 3.1.3 ipsw with various 3rd party hacks to try and give the same features that iOS 4.x offers to newer iPhone models.

I know this thread has already gone a little off topic, but please don't drag it further off topic.
Your question has NOTHING to do with this thread. Don't threadjack it is impolite.

At first, it may look useless, but there are circumstances when it may be quite useful. For instance, if:
You don't have a wireless card on your computer...
... or you have a broken wireless card on your computer...
... or you have a good wireless card, but you don't have any drivers...
... and you have an iPhone and a WiFi-only connection...
... and you're not satisfied with SSH tunneling/SOCKS proxy...
... and you really want to buy a legal copy of Snow Leopard, instead of forking all that money (or even more) for that functionality.
I know, there are a few apps out there that can do that. But I was always baffled by their prices. For god's sake, $29 is the price for a Snow Leopard DVD. Besides, I really abhor system-wide hooks (you know what those are), because -- if abused -- they may bring your entire system to its knees.

So, I tried to extend the native functionality (misd) for iPhone 2G/3G/3Gs and have it share your WiFi connection.

    Guys,

Just playing with my 2G after a long time. The link mentioned in the above post doesnt work anymore. anyone have a mirror or copy you could reupload?

    thanks,

Just copied this part into my posting. Cannot quote this part any more after posting, but the original was from sfolder from December 2009

    "Default Any one try this?

Step 1 - Start ‘Cydia’ on your jailbroken iPhone springboard.
Step 2 - Select ‘Manage’ tab at the bottom of your iPhone screen and then select ‘Sources’.
Step 3 - Select ‘Edit’ and then select ‘Add’. Now enter a URL source. Type ‘http://cydia.iphonemod.com.br/’ and select on ‘Add Source’. Once Cydia has added the source click on ‘Return to Cydia’ button.
Step 4 - Once the installation is completed. Search for ‘iPhone 2G: Tethering, MMS, bluetooth profile’ in Cydia and install it.
Step 5 - This app will automatically enable internet tethering and fix issues related to MMS, Bluetooth and Lotus Profile on your unlocked and jailbroken iPhone 2G 3.1.2 firmware.

Note: You must install this package only on iPhone 2G firmware 3.1.2. Let me know if it works with other iPhone models. "

And a small caveat: if you have other tweaks in M68AP.plist (like gas-gauge-battery), they'll be lost.
    Hi there,
I am one of these, who didn't read the last line, but just installed the Package. I know this is a very old posting, but maybe there is someone around who is willing to help me?

Still the package is not listed but if I look at the "Aktualisieren" side - must be refresh or something like this in english, there is the tethering and many more of there cydia.iphonemod.com.br things listed.
For I have 3.1.3 on my jailbroken iPhone 2G I'd like to get rid of it, before anything crashes.

Any ideas? I know it was my own stupidity to just go for it. But I was kind of in a hurry and need the tethering function in Berlin where I am going to go in two hours...

I don't find any buttons to delete the source or the things that would be installed if I click on "Aktualisieren".

If that is not possible, how do I go back to 3.1.2 without transforming my iPhone into a paperweight?
    Regards,
    Bette
