Default Iphone 2G 3.1.2 - old SIM card

I have an old sim card through the original AT&T and a 2nd hand Iphone 2G. I've never been able to use it as a phone b/c it says I have an invalid SIM. If AT&T says it's because my sim card is from the old AT&T and not since the merger. If I unlocked the phone, would my SIM card become "valid"? And to do that, I understand I'd have to revert back to 2.2.1, but is the baseband for 3.1.2 the same as 2.2.1? Thanks for your help and any other suggestions would be appreciated.

You should always be able to request a new sim card from AT&T, this has fixed many odd problems for some iPhone users.

You would need to hacktivate your iPhone to allow your existing SIM card to be used with the iPhone. Probably would need to unlock as well, but not 100% sure about that.

I have requested new SIMs a few times, but they say that my rate plan is not compatible with the "new" (since the ATT/Cingular merger) and that I have to get a new rate plan (new contract) to get a new SIM.

I'll do some searching on this site, but hacktivate is different than jailbreaking? I tried to use Quikpawn, but my it doesn't support my firmware. If I could borrow a friend's mac and used pwnagetool, would that hactivate?

    Thanks again for your help.

You do realise that once you do get your iPhone working if you do use data, AT&T will detect you are not on the correct rate plan and start bugging you to switch anyway.

Don't use quickpwn. It is out of date and unsupported.

If you borrowed your friend's mac, yes it should only hacktivate if you follow this tutorial and skip the unlock section.
