    Default Instruction!

Disclaimer: These steps work for me. If you screw up your iphone, it's not my fault! : )

iphone 2g on 3.1.2 unlocked and jailbroken with OpenSSH and common commands (adv_cmds, basic_cmds, etc) on Tmobile network with unlimited text. (we'll see if T-mobile charge me extra for MMS...)

OK after reading all of the post and trying this for myself, here is what I came up with (Using MacBook Pro):

Legend: _x) where x is a number = run in Terminal

    1) dl zip. (easy enough)
    2) unzip

    Start Terminal
    _3) cd ___Directory_containing_CommCenter____
    _3)
    Code:
    ssh root@192.168.xxx.xxx
    (change to your iphone)
    4) enter password (hint: it's alpine unless you've changed it)
    _5) mv /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/CommCenter /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/CommCenter.orig
    _6) exit
    _7)
    Code:
    scp CommCenter root@192.168.xxx.xxx:/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/
    8) enter password
    _9)
    Code:
    scp root@192.168.xxx.xxx:/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/M68AP.plist
    .
    _10) plutil -convert xml1 M68AP.plist

Open your favorite text editing program (I used vi)
    11) Edit you plist according to Whiterat's instructions
    12) Save

    _13)
    Code:
    scp M68AP.plist root@192.168.xxx.xxx:/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app
    /
    14) enter password
    _15)
    Code:
    ssh root@192.168.xxx.xxx
    16) enter password
    _17) chown root:wheel /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/CommCenter
    _18) chmod 755 /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/CommCenter
    _19) exit

    20) manually reboot iphone
    21) go to Setting->General->Network->Cellular\ Data\ Network on your iphone. You should see MMS section. If not, you did something wrong!
    22) hit Reset Settings <- (crucial to getting the APN to stick)
    23) reboot iphone again
    24) go to Messages, you should see camera button now.
    25) go Setting->General->Network->Cellular\ Data\ Network and enter the following for MMS section:
    APN: wap.voicestream.com
    26) hit return after you enter "wap.voicestream.com" <- (also critical to get the APN to stick)
    Username:
    Password:
    MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
    MMS Proxy: 216.155.165.50:8080
    MMS Max Message Size: 614400
    MMS UA Prof URL:

    26) Enjoy MMS!

As for the battery issue, I didn't see much change in iphone's battery life. It might be using more, but I wouldn't know... : )

if you're a newby pls stay away!

Whiterat's method works for me on T-Mobile Flex monthly + Shadow unlimi text + data

one thing i did notice is that the battery does drain much faster.
I do not use mms so it's not because I'm sending more data.

Thx all of you!! It works!!

oh btw I also use the "T-mobile US - Postpais/Flexpaid" carrier bundle

Just wanted to confirm the tweak! This is on an iPhone 2g 8GB with 3.1.2 firmware, and AT&T mms settings. It wasn't so bad, it was more painful copy and pasting the settings and afterwards they erase. However, if you go to unlockit.co.nz/, then you'll be able to get the settings done right. This was also accomplished with only mms settings, apn for data was faked out.

Many kudos to everyone involved in the development and creation of this hack =) Thank you for making my iPhone 2g closer inch by inch to a feature rich phone without breaking the bank!

If you cant access the APN Setting check this:

    - Connect with putty

    Code:
    cd /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/

    ls -l
Check if your provider is listed. In my case:

    Code:
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 204 Sep 26 10:38 TMobile_Germany.bundle

    mv TMobile_Germany.bundle TMobile_Germany.bundle.old
After renaming the dir restart your Handy and hack it again.

    enjoy,

I installed the patch and have it working perfectly with Tmobile USA. The real issue is still the battery drain though. My phone often dies with some pretty decent use at about 9pm when taken off the charge at 5:30 am whereas without the patch it is easily a 30 hour phone.

Default Content and Size MMS error

Only one problem. I cannot receive MMS from other phones. I can send MMS from my iphone to myself and that shows up and is all good, but when I try to use other phones to send MMS, it state "The media Content was not included due to a picture resolution or message size restriction."

Anyone else getting this error? Any ideas how to fix this? I am on Tmobile btw.

    Thanks!

24 hours of almost continuous trawling of the web later...

If you have an iPhone 2G (you wouldn't be reading this otherwise, right?) and you're on AT&T in the U.S. and you're on O.S. 3.1.2 and you have v 5.6 of the AT&T profile and you want visual voice mail to keep working as well as have MMS, then you need to do the following:

    1. Install CommCenter like it says at the start of this thread.
    2. Install the mobile config like it says here

(If you have any other profiles installed, you might have to remove them - go take a look in Settings/General/Profile).

That's it. Basically installing a separate mobile config seems to get around the whole problem with AT&T blocking MMS access for iPhone 2G. Also the link given in item 2 above installs a mobile config that actually doesn't screw up VVM - unlike every other mobile config I've come across.

To see why it doesn't screw up VVM take a look at this thread and then take a look at the mobileconfig that was installed (in /var/mobile/Library/ConfigurationProfiles/).

Why does using a mobileconfig work? I'm not sure, but it seems that all the mobile configs I have seen have a phone number in the name. Maybe that has something to do with it? If I felt like spending another couple of days investigating, I guess I could find out.

Anyway, I'm a happy camper now. Thank goodness for configuration profiles - what Apple takes away with one hand, they give with the other.
