Default How to find out when unlock is available for 05.12.01

What page should I bookmark or follow which person on twitter to find out if there has been an unlock for the newest baseband?
I bought a prestine 3g on craigslist only to find out it had been updated. I would sell it but of course right after it sells there will be a solution.

thanks in advance for any advice.

Don't give false hope, yes some exploits exist in the 05.12.01 baseband. Devteam has confirmed that one can probably be used for an unlock.

Problem is: 3.1.3 is a insignificant release, it adds nothing of value.

For 3GS owners, a new jailbreak is required to apply any new unlock that is developed.

There is no value in giving away a jailbreak hole and an unlock hole to Apple for a useless feature free OS update that everyone was warned not to update to.

Blacksn0w was only released because the exploit behind it was made public. With the exploit public and a jailbreak already available. Apple would have patched the blacksn0w exploit even if it was never made into an unlock.

This time around, the baseband exploit(s) have not been made public. Yes the world knows they exist, but not the details. So Apple can only guess at where the hole is.

The jailbreak community is waiting until the iPad and the nex iPhone are released before providing any more jailbreaks. You will be waiting till June/July and the jailbreak will be for iPhone OS 3.2 or 4.0 whatever is the most current at that point.

So I can quite confidently say that unless the exploit is accidentally made public, you will never see an unlock for that baseband and you will maybe see a jailbreak for a higher OS version in July.

That is good and well, but it also means the people who have never unlocked their iPhone beforehand and need to do so now (as opposed to those who have unlocked and just didn't pay attention to warnings) are effectively screwed.

In my case, I had to move from the States to a different country a week ago due to circumstances beyond my control. I have never had any reason to unlock my iPhone before this time, and knowing that the community tends to release updates a few days/weeks after each upgrade is released by Apple, I did not even think of checking the boards for "upgrade warnings" before my move, nor did I know that the update was "feature free". When iTunes displayed the update dialog, I instinctively clicked "yes".

Now I am stuck, along with anyone who will buy an iPhone before the new OS is released, with a nonworking phone for a period of months. I, for one, consider releasing an unlock to be "of value".

Your circumstances are not unusual. However, this is the normal process and necessary to have any future hope.

I don't feel bad about the 'idiots' who rush to update. Maybe they will learn it's not always best to be the 1st to try something new.

However, I feel for the new Apple iPhone customers who buy thinking they can jailbreak and/or use with any carrier -- or the warranty replacements that are now stuck.

Apple is doing everything possible to lock you in to their way .. and their way only!!

    Currently ...
They have won the 'tethered' boot......
and they have won the SHSH battle.....
and they have prevented jailbreak ...
and they have won the restricted carrier ....

Which ones can our community break -- and when? No one knows for sure. But the list of Apple wins is getting longer and the solutions fewer and farther between.

If you feel frustrated with the lack of competition in the US phone market and the fact that most other telcos who offer the iPhone also offer the ability to officially unlock the iPhone.

Then do one of these things

Complain to the appropriate government departments that they are not doing enough to offer true competition the mobile market. Push your support for a DCMA exemption for jailbreaking and push for a mandatory requirement that official carrier unlock be offered after your contract is complete with the carrier.
Send a clear message to AT&T that the lack of official unlock has influenced your future purchasing decisions and you will be telling all your friends/colleagues to avoid AT&T.

Also if your move was out of your control, then you should ask your employer (I am assuming you were forced to move for work purposes) to pay for a new mobile that actually works in your new country.

I will certainly do that (complain to higher ups and let my friends know about AT&T's behavior). However, both of these have been tried and tested for quite a while by a large number of people, and if they will affect AT&T's policies within the next few months, I will eat my hat.

I will certainly get a new phone that works in the new country, but it will not be an iPhone. The purpose of my original post was simply to say that there is, in fact, a reason to release an unlock for the iPhone before the next major revision is released by Apple, by providing my own situation as an example.

In other words, AT&T's policies are, for all practical purposes, out of my hands completely (with all due respect to official complaints). However, if there is even a small chance that a developer reads this post and is affected by it, writing this has been worth my while
