I believe if you have 3.0 GM then you cannot downgrade.
That was one of the explanations on the GM version.

it has been said for every single beta of 3.0 that you can't downgrade and it has been possible up through beta 5, thats not to say that its been an easy process and that its still possible for the final. the question is why do you want to downgrade? if its because you lost your unlock and you think you'll get it back the you are SOL till an unlock comes out for the new baseband. the old adage comes to mind "look before you leap"

It's not simple anymore, Apple has been working on upgrading the iTunes architecture and the way iTunes interacts with iPhone.

Today, the final iTunes version is 8.2 and it's the only one able to interact with iPhones which run the 3.0 Golden Master release because of reasons listed above. Thus, mechanics for entering the DFU mode have also changed, I know this from experience (running 3.0 GM) and am unable to reach DFU state which is the only way "insecure" enough to push the older software (2.2.1-). Everyone has been warned, more or less. I am researching new ways to downgrade, out of curiosity, not really out of need... Don't need the unlock, hell, I only bought iPhone to mess with it.

I encourage everyone if they find some way to nail it's sorry ass to let us know.

when i downgraded to 2.2.1 the last time i did i needed to downgrade to itunes 8.1.1 that is almost 100% a requisite if you want even a 1/100th chance in hell of going back.

Betas all subjugate themselves to iTunes 8.1.1, I managed to kick iPhone from 3.0 beta 5 to 2.2.1, but the same procedure, nor any alike don't work with the iPhone 3.0 GM because it requires the damn iTunes 8.2 which updates the USB implementation and way of interacting with the iPhone so... Yeah, we are in trouble...

EDIT: I'll try with the beta which I have on my laptop, I'll let you know. I think only the latest final release has the update of the low-level USB mechanics.

You can downgrade without issues, first go to 2.0.2, then upgrade to 2.2.1 assual.
