    Nice guide but I still don't understand what's the purpose of going back all the way to 2.0.2 rather than just starting from 2.2.1

    2.0.2 -> 3.0 keeps the phone activated.

    So does 2.2.1 if you properly jailbeak it.

    I understand that you have to upgrade from a activated iPhone in order to make it work, but I don't understand why it has to be a 2.0.2.

    It doesn't have to be 2.0.2
    It also can be 2.0 or 2.0.1, the key program here is QuickpwnRC2.
    Why ? Because the activation file that is installed by quickpwnRC2 survives the upgrade process to 3.0
    I've tested a lot of quickpwn versions, but the activation file from RC2 is the only one until now that works. And QuickpwnRC2 can support up to 2.0.2 firmware.

    So if I use QuickPwn or PwnageTool under OSX (which supports 2.2.1 just fine) I can upgrade to 3.0 without problems.

    That's the answer I was looking for, thanks.

    I do not have a OSX system here, only windows. So if it works with newer quickpwn versions on OSX i would really like to know.

    been testing and have confirmed, if you're properly unlocked on 2.2.1 (Custom firmware, unlocked), update to 3.0 works fine (you won't lose activation)

    did this all on OS X using iTunes 8.0 (updated to 8.1 after iPhone was up to 3.0).

    downside, youtube is broken...
