Find my iPhone alternative?
Apple released "Find my iPhone" with the 3.0 software and MobileMe. Since it is very expensive I was wondering if it is possible to emulate the way apples servers contacts the iphone to get the position so that someone could create an "find my iphone" alternative?
yes Find my iPhone should be free!
It is outrageous that they charge for a tool for recovering a device of this type!
Someone develop an alternative, so Apple makes it part of OS3 without MobileMe!
you can use undercover instead.
It's not as great as mobile me but probably its a possibility to retutn your stolen iphone.
the only problem is that the thief has to be really stupid or that he has no knowledge of an iphone.
The thief has to launch the undercover app!!!! (It fakes the splashscreen so that the thief thinks its a game)
But be honestly who is such an idiot and uses an stolen phone without formatting and even launching apps?
so thats no real alternative

Please confirm your eMail or contact staff!
A very good Find my Iphone alternative can be found here:
findmyi - Home - Track stolen iPhones / iTouches, and family members!
This application has been available for more than 6 months, and needs your iPhone to be jailbroken, as it uses background processes.
I suspect Apple used their idea to implement its own solution.
1 - It is free if you only want to track your iPhone in a 1/2 miles radius.
Then you have the choice to pay a monthly fee to have 1-3 meters range precision or you can pay a one time fee and for 3 days you can locate you iphone within 1-3 meters.
2 - You don't need mobile me
3 - You can track several iPhone using the same interface and a master account
4 - Was upgraded for OS 3.0 and is available via cidia.
1 - It drains the battery very very quickly. Too quickly to my taste.
2 - It doesn't have the option to ring the phone
3 - You have to trust those guys and the reliabilty of their services in the long run.
Worth a try if you really don't want to pay for Mobile me.
Happy Independence Day!
I must admit that Apple's "Find My iPhone" is a pretty awesome app to help you keep track of your shiny new 4G iPhone. It has some great features that are double dipped in Apple’s sweet secret sauce of proprietary code that is not publicly available in their SDK. (with some good reason)
If you want the ability to wipe a phone from a distance you gotta pony up to Apple’s $99 annual fee for Mobile Me
...and depending on what pics you take with your camera, that money might be worth it.
However, if all you want is the ability to find your phone, I suggest checking out the PleaseFind.it service
We've built an app called "PleaseFind.it" that only costs $4.95 and gives you a lot of the same functionality. If you ever lose or misplace your iPhone all you need to do is log into PleaseFind.it (thats the URL) and the service will show you where it was last spotted.
It doesn’t have all the proprietary bells and whistles of "Find My iPhone" ... but it elegantly handles the 'dude, where's my iPhone' usecase without eating up all your battery life. (we're a little bit clever about this)
...perhaps it's as good a day as any to declare your independence from MobileMe’s $99 annual fee to find your iphone

Full Disclosure: The $4.95 price is part of a 50% OFF "omg, we just launched promotion" + "Happy Independence from Mobile Me sale" that goes on for another week, after which time it will go back up to its regular price of $9.95.
