Default Ex-Jailbroken 2g now in recovery hell, help!?

Hi, i hope someone can help....

I have a 2g iphone which was jailbroken 2.2.1 using quickpwn. I wanted to upgrade it to 3.0 and stupidly tried it through itunes without taking any precautions, it didn't upgrade properly and gave an error.

My phone is now stuck in recovery mode but when i try and restore it i get error 1604 i have tried many things...deleting itunes/mobile support/quicktime etc i have tried an older version of itunes, I have tried jailbreaking it using redsnow, resetting the mobile support drivers, using a different usb port, tried restoring in DFU (interestingly when doing this itunes tries to restore it as an ipod).

I am at my wits end, have no phone genius bar wouldn't touch it...please someone help.

    Many thanks,

    T.Ogre

Try putting the iPhone in DFU mode then restore to stock Apple FW 3 in iTunes. take care for jailbreak/unlock later.

Yep, you mean that stupid dialog like "iTunes has.... an iPod in recovery mode"?. No worries, just hit "Restore" then. iTunes will then check if the correct firmware for your iPhone 2G is already on your PC and will download it if not. Restore will begin after taht. Just go ahead.

In recovery mode itunes sees an iphone but gives me a 1604 error when trying to restore. In DFU itunes says 'ipod' must be restored, when you click check you just get a status bar saying waiting for ipod.

Am starting to worry that i may have well and truly f'd my phone.

If the iPhone is in DFU mode and you choose to restore to Apple stock firmware, this has to work as long as there is no hardware problem.
Do you have access to another computer, Windows or Mac, just give it a try.
You have iTunes 8.2 installed, right?

    In DFU itunes says:

itunes must check the ipod software update server to identify this device. [Check] [Cancel]

    - choose cancel and it goes back to itunes no device listed, choose check then you get a status bar saying waiting for ipod. After a while a message saying:

An ipod has been detected but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the ipod, then try again. An unknown error occurred (1601)

Can you think of anything else?? Oh and thank you for your help so far.

    OK, try this one:
Download the stock firmware 3.0 for the iPhone 2G from Apples server here:

    http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....1_Restore.ipsw

Once done put the downloaded file iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw on the desktop of your Mac/PC.
Put the iPhone in DFU mode. Once it shows the "found an iPod in Recovery..." screen, hold Shift (Windows) or Option (Mac) on the keyboard then hit the Restore button. you should see a dialog then. select the firmware file you downloaded. This way we're sure you got a stock working ipsw.

When in DFU it never gives me the option to restore, it insists on checking the ipod software server then goes straight to a status bar waiting for ipod, when it doesn't find an ipod it shows an error screen (1601).

    I think it's cursed!

    OK, lets see.
iPhone and Mac/PC are connected. iTunes is shut down. Shut down the iPhone by holding start/sleep until the iPhone display goes black - let go of start/sleep.
If this fails (shutting off), hold start/sleep and Home until the screen goes black, let go of start/sleep but keep holding Home. After about 10-15 seconds iTunes should start up (you are still holding Home), popping up a window telling you it found an iPhone/iPod in recovery/restore mode. Let go of Home, iPhone screen is black = DFU mode.
In the checkbox telling you an iPhone is found in recovery click OK, dialog should disappear.
On a Windows-PC: Hold shift cap then, while holding click restore in iTunes main window.
On a Mac: Hold option cap then, while holding click restore in iTunes main window.
A window should pop up letting you choose the downloaded ipsw (local on your Mac/PC). select it and click ok.
iTunes should not do any online check
