Let me share my 3.0 install, then downgrade experience:

    3.0 Install:
    -----------
1-Upgrade (not restored) to 3.0 from 2.2, on a pwned 1st gen phone.
2-The phone ended up deactivated. So I had to activate using iTunes.
3-Luckly it's a registered development phone. I have SIM cards from 4 official carriers, but it required the AT&T SIM.
4-Since there is no AT&T signal here, I end up with an iPod touch! but working

    Downgrade:
    ---------

1-Attemped non-DFU restore of 2.2.1. I knew it was going to fail, as it did. Phone ended up in restore mode, as expected.
2-Reset the phone. Placed it in DFU and did a 2.2.1 restore.
3-Voila! Worked. iTunes completed the restore successfully. No need to use quickpwn to "fix it".

My guess is that the error people are getting is exclusive to the 3G phones and the reason is the well known baseband mismatch. iTunes will never downgrade a baseband, even on a 1st gen. It upgrades only when the one on the ipsw is newer than the one on the phone. When it's the same version, it does not upgrade, nor it generates an error. So when restoring a 1st gen phone, it will not fail at all (provided that it started in DFU mode).

I will repeat what I already said (and others, including the Dev-Team, have posted on several places):

YOUR MAC WILL NOT RECOGNIZE A PHONE IN DFU MODE IF CONNECTED TO THE BUILT-IN USB PORT.

Reason: on MacOSX 10.5.6 the drivers for the built-in USB ports is buggy.

    Options are:

    - Connect via a USB HUB. This is a safe method and will force the use of other drivers that are not buggy.

    - Downgrade the USB drivers on your MacOSX 10.5.6. Does not require hardware, but may be risky.

Check the Dev-Team Blog. At this time the information is on page 2 (Close the stable door!) and page 6 ('Tis the Season to be Jolly! - yellowsn0w).

    REMEMBER!

*To follow the most appropriate instructions that suit your issue
    AND
*Make sure your iPhone is in FULL dfu mode (not when you can see the itunes usb logo), the screen should be blank and your pc recognising it is in dfu mode. You should see a full white image flash across the screen when your restore is in process.

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO EASY DOWNGRADE FROM 3.0 TO 2.2.1

    on a Windows Computer

    1) open itunes
    2) get iphone in DFU mode
    3) select restore iphone (using the original 2.2.1 firmware, not the custom one)
    4) let iphone do the restart process until you get ERROR 1013
    5) close itunes
    6) open quickpwn. you will get a message saying to hold power and home for 15 seconds. do it exactly like that hold the power and home for 15 secs.
    7) turn on iphone by holding power button for 2 secs
    8) open itunes and BINGO iphone is recognize and activated

    there you go...

PS: iphone works fine on FW 2.2.1 and the newer baseband 04.20.01
PERFECT! Thank you much. A step of contention, make sure you're entering DFU mode and not just the re-activation mode. I did that like 3 times and kept getting a 1609 or 1614 error. Make sure you're in DFU mode!!!

That said, restore worked like a champ, power cycling the phone like QuickPWN says took care of it. Restoring from pre-3.0 backup now and I should have a usable device again in short order.

    Thanks for the tip!

    Default note for officially unlocked

hi everyone, a quick note for the officailly unlocked phones. i have followed the list of action and got my phone back but with no phone service (cannot do or receive calls). I accordingly restored again to 2.2.1 and did a restart and connected the phone to itunes (no need for quickpawn at all) and that took care of everything.

    best regards,

This worked for me as well but I'm not sure if you really need to use quickpwn for anything. i usually have the same issues after jailbreaking my phone - usually a reboot does the trick and that's all quickpwn is telling you to do no?

    FYI --
For myself, and several others on this forum, downgrading to 2.2.1 has caused data connection errors, causing our data connections to drop anywhere from 15-30 minutes after they are established. This can be worked around by toggling 3G in the network settings, and some have had success in wiping the phone and NOT restoring from a backup, just proceeding with configuring it as a new phone.

Just so everyone knows! Downgrading is not without risks -- while the majority of functionality works, there may be other issues waiting in the wings.
