There are many ways that Apple can protect the filesystem key.

Apple is obviously now taking an interest into how they protect the key. This has never been done before. But apparently, now they care. That's a concern.

A beta period where almost nothing works anyway is absolutely the *worst* time to play cat&mouse with Apple on the asr key. Almost nobody benefits, and it takes serious time away from other important jailbreak and unlock issues.

Please don't lose sight of the forest for the trees.

So you (the dev team), do not currently have the filesystem key? Or are you keeping it under wraps so Apple does not change it before 3.0 final? Even if you wait to release the key location, apple still could change it with every firmware release (Since everyone knows they will release the inevidible 3.0.1), and they could release it the day after you release an updated pwnage.

i thought jailbreaking was not the issue, for lets say at least factory unlocked iphones?

The only issue is, if devteam released the key (in case they have it) now, apple would definitly change the way they store it, while when the key is not revealed now they might or might not.

If you want the Icons you can definitly do a screen capture and the extract the icons from there - no need for the key.

Advantage of releasing key right now:
    - pwned buggy beta firmware

    Disadvantage of releasing key now:
    - probably takes longer of a pwned final 3.0 release

    Advantage of releasing key later:
    - high chance of short pwn release after final 3.0 comes out

    Disadvantage of releasing key later
    - no pwnd buggy beta firmware

Apple will change the key with every beta release (if they were smart.) Ever since the Cydia Store, and other rip-offs opened up Apple really needs to step up on security. Even though I hope they will finally either embrace jailbreaking or, allow at least registered devs with root access (like Google does with Android)

The key changing isn't a concern...it's that they are now tweaking the *method* in which the key is stored (for the first time ever). It's not worth playing cat&mouse with Apple on the method, all for a buggy beta

Very true I've been wanting to try out 3.0 but not till i can use my jailbreak with it and i agree its better not to play cat and mouse until they decide on a set method of hiding the key like... the finale 3.0

I believe this is what the OP is attempting to find out.

So basically it's not okay for apple to keep everything closed and prevent unlocking, but it is okay for the dev team to not share out the keys because they want to make sure they can jailbreak it faster.

I think it's ironic that the jailbreaking team is now keeping secrets.

The deal should be everyone with full information disclosure no matter what, working together. So what if apple makes it harder to crack next time? They are going to do that ALREADY. We'll just work that much harder to open the files the next time.

I find it ironic that "hackers" who scream about openness suddenly stop being open wants they have the information in their greedy little hands.

    There. I said it.

"We" are not stopping you from finding it on your own. "We" are simply choosing not to make lives harder for ourselves for a buggy beta. There are more important things to fix without needing to escalate things with Apple.

When the final 3.0 comes out, it will all be published. And hopefully we'll have had time to fix the stuff that needs fixing.
