Default Snow Leopard Compatible Video Card

    Hi everyone!

First I want to say you are all doing a great job helping with guides, tips and tricks. Nice job.
Secondly, I need your help, better said - your advice :>
    My config is:

    Mobo: GIGABYTE EP43-UD3L
    CPU: Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo 3.0Ghz
    Video Card: ATI HD 2600
    RAM: 2x 2GB Kingston
    HDD: WD 640 GB 7200rpm 64MB cache
    Sata DVD-RW - LG

Well, I am running Leopard (10.5.8) right now but I decided I want to install Snow Leopard on my machine.
I've tried to install SL, all fine with the installation but when I finish install and get to reboot, it rebuts (with -v and have no error) and then BAM, the screen goes black
So I changed the video card with the ATI HD 5770 borrowed from a friend of mine and repeat the installation, all good, and after reboot IT DOES gives me the welcome screen with the user creation and bla-bla BUT with low resolution (btw, I have a 23" full HD screen).

So after this experiment I obviously thought that I should buy a SL campatible video card.
My budget is 100 Euros (about $130)

My first local option is the
VC GAINWARD GT220 1GB from nvidia. is this one a SL compatible video card?

Any suggestions? I am not an "ONLY" kind of guy, I would gladly use nvidia cards or ATI, it doesn't matter.

Thanks in advance and greetings from Romania!

    Hi there,
    Welcome.
You could go to netkas.org to check out for list of compatible video cards and available kexts/drivers, particular the Nvidia 8000/9000, 200/300 series under Nvidia section.
    Regards,

    Hi,
    I have a couple of 8400 GS.
On netkas.org, in Nvidia section, search for ATI ATY_init injection blog. There it lists all the compatible cards, and see if yours supported.
    Regards,

Thanks, I have found the resources I needed from netkas!
And last, will I be able to take advantage of SL's OpenCL with the GT220 1GB?

Here is another option but for the AT Radeon HD 4670.

This one it's looking good. Here, take a look
I dunno, VC is about $80 at my local store, if I will decide to go with this card I can even save to buy the Snow Leopard retail DVD too.

    anyways, i am still searching

    Hi,
With the new macs coming out, it seems that they are leaning toward Nvidia and Intel, not so much of ATI. That is why more NV cards got supported.
I have the same motherboard as yours, and there is a Mod Mac BIOS available for it. Have you tried that?
    Regards,

Just generally speaking, if you want to install windows and play 3D games, then you definitely want the ATI over the nVidia.
Well not for the games but for what I use ( 2D + renderings ) the specs say ATI is handling those stuff better in some way...
but hey, I don't judge till i get my hands on one of those cards.

No, I didn't know about this Mod Mac BIOS!
    How is it?

    Hi,
The mod BIOS works very well. It came with all the DSDT and hardware patches in it. I just got Leopard running and the installation went so well. Drop Ideneb 1.6 in, couple custom selections and less than 10 minutes I am in OSX. I will try retail DVD for both Leopard and SL see how it goes. For testing, it now multiple boot WinXP, Win7, Unbutu 32/64 Linux, Mandriva Linux, and Leopard 10.5.8.
    Regards,

haha, so you're telling me I can get rid of that standard gigabyte start logo and replace it with the apple logo?

He, I am too lazy to disable it from bios >_>
