Your Dell should work fine, mostly. I tried a bunch of distro and a bunch just would not work with my dell. Finally settled on iATKOS v7, which allows use of vanilla kernel and Apple software update. Near perfect.
Make a list of all your hardware. You will need it when you select drivers (kext). Check all the hardware compatibility lists and see if your hardware has worked with OSx86 before. I found bits and parts on the HCL that pointed to my Dell being compatible with hacking. I did need to disable some onboard stuff, and replace with better video and NIC, since what i had was not compatible.
