Noob wants to dual boot on AMD a6130n and DV7, AND Acer Aspire One

I have an HP DV7 (1264nr) laptop which is AMD, an HP a6130n desktop AMD, and an Acer Aspire One 532h (SLOW).

Before I try to dual boot my laptop or netbook, I'm interested in dual booting my desktop HP a6130n.

I am most likely going to follow this guide: Install Snow Leopard on AMD PC, Laptop, however it says I need a Mac present to create a special disk.

If I install OS X (retail) onto a USB HD, would I be able to use that install to create the necessary disk? I think so..

Would it also maybe be possible to create the disk after running OS X in VMWARE? (noob to that process as well )

I wish I would've asked this question earlier since it's now too late to get the required retail disk tonight!

Right now I'm starting to get desperate and want to try the torrent method just to see if I can get it running in vmware just for fun. Or I could go to bed and wake up and go buy the disk LOL (which I'm going to buy even if I DL for fun first! Otherwise I wouldn't be asking about the AMD problem since you just need to patch to run in vmware)

Since you have AMD buying a Retail disc wouldn't do you much good because you can't boot Vanilla. So you will have to mod it and then either have a dual-layer disc (slow) or large flash drive.

I've got a 500gb external usb hd, would that be handy? :)

I know it's like I need an existing mac to make the recovery disk, and I went ahead and got the torrent going so I can use VMWARE, hopefully that will lend a hand.

It's just so frustrating how there's a billion different guides and different ways to do everything. I know it's because every pc system is different, but I've pretty much narrowed it down for myself since I'm AMD lol (except for the slow netbook)

I guess it's all just trial and error though.

But the AMD guides say I need the retail disk, I just wish I knew where to begin really!

The AMD guide that you mentioned is a good one (although I think it was written by a different person who also provided all the file in a folder bearing his name). IMHO, for AMD people that is one of the best. In fact, I'm writing this on an AMD system running SL using that guide, and yes, you do need an existing OSX to do the installation and modification.
I think dealing with OSX installation troubles and VMWare issues in windows are kind of straightening out two problems at the same time, and that is a bit harder. But if you got your mind set then just go for it, and will try to solve any problem as it comes.
It would be a bit easier, I think, just to use a spare partition in your hard drive to install a Leopard distro, be it Ideneb or Iatkos, and then use it as a medium to install your retail SL DVD the way you wish, as an extra choice of OSX for SL software compatibility issue, as a backup/maintenance volume for your SL, and plus it will give some familiarities to OSX installation and usage.

SO, I now download either Ideneb or Iatkos (from a torrent I suspect), what instructions would I want to follow for that install? And how would I partition the drive in advance?

Hi there,
You can partition your hard drive any way you wish, using windows/Linux/Live DVD, and fat32 be sufficient. Once you get to OSX install screen then you will use its disk utility to reformat to HFS+ journaled. Or better yet you can just plug in your spare hard drive (if you have one handy) and use a part of it or whatever.
If you like to multiple boot with other OS's (win, linux, unix etc.) then the best thing is doing OS installation one at a time with other OS disk drive disconnect from the system to preserved boot system, ex. disconnect your windows disk drive when doing installation of OSX onto another drive, and when everything finished then reconnect all drive and have your OSX chameleon boot loader to be the master your all OS's.
I found that Ideneb 1.6 10.5.8 Lite Edition is easier for my AMD system in term of installation and usage.
I would love to talk in real time but I'm sorry due to some other things I have to attend. If you have any problem then we do have very good supports/sharing in this community, and one of the members here will try to address your issues.

Some of those guides are dated from 2007, 2008. The Ideneb 1.6 and Iatkos v7 (these are the newest ones) were released just a few months ago with better hardware support and known issues solutions.

I do however want Windows and SL to share the same storage for photos/vids/etc if that's possible..

What I want in the end is: dual boot with Windows 7 Ultimate/SL Retail (+eventually iLife & iWork).

I'll go get Ideneb, and wait on the partition (pending the storage question) Yeah it sounds like I need someone to take me step by step doesn't it? :P

Yes, you can share storage between the two OS's, on a separate partition would be ideal. Actually, with additional software/utility OSX and Windows can read and write to each other. And if you don't like disconnecting hard drives then leave it in, but to make sure that you don't install into a wrong volume/partition.
Yes, I have both AMD and Intel.
