Yes, that is correct as the reason for boot option is mostly due to kernel (and core system) issue. The most supported vanilla kernel would be in 10.6.4 (as many newest genuine mac hardwares are base on i-class CPU, way behind non-mac pc hardwares), and that would cover even i7 CPU. Yours is i3 so it would be less requirement as per kernel supporting.

Of course, after removing the Vanilla kernel and putting in the Qoopz kernel, I get a kernel panic. So close.
    Specs:
    Dell Studio 1749
    Intel i3-330M
    Intel HM55 Chipset
    Intel HD Graphics
    6 gigs RAM
    Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200
I will specify any other specs if needed

You don't have to remove kernels to test them out.

As for boot options you may still need some until all updated/loaded.

As for kernels, you could have as many as you want in your SL root. Just make sure that they are of different names.

Your default kernel would be the one in boot.plist. To boot with different kernel, just call its name at Chameleon boot screen as boot option, and needed to be the first one before any other option.

Ok, so I used the Vanilla kernel and it booted up fine with busratio=16 cpus=1. I finished install and added VoodooPS2 so I can use my keyboard and trackpad. Now I just need to get Ethernet, Wifi, sound, Bluetooth, and get Chameleon to work right. Right now I need to use the original boot disk just to get into Snow. Work in progress.

When I try to update to 10.6.4 it kernel panics right before the installer finishes. Couldn't boot back into it. I tried to go back to the kernel I was using and nothing. For now, I've restored my 10.6.0 install. Any thoughts as to what might be causing the kernel panic? I thought that 10.6.4 was supposed to work with the i3-330M?
