    Default possibly

The $30 disk is indeed a retail install disk and not an upgrade disk, it says so on the package. I have not been able to make it boot, I just keep getting kernel panics, but I know that if you have your hardware, kexts and bios set up right, it should work. I sucessfully used this disk to install snow leopard in vmware, so it will work

you have to use a retail disk to install, the disk that came with your MBP won't work.
snow leopard is only $30, it's an easy install using leppy700m disc image.
